It would be a huge mistake to be confident that we're better than they are, ... They run, lift weights and go to football class all year. There's 20 sports whose sole lifeline depends on football here. They can't exist without successful football. There's such a huge burden on football revenue, schools don't have a choice.

I have to deal with speculation all the time. But 10 years from now, I see a conference with 12-to-14 basketball-playing schools and at least 12 football-playing schools. We do have a strategic plan, and we'll follow it.

It was a sad thing what happened to Kenny. The good part is that he has healed up. What his football future is, I can't tell you right now. I'm somewhat optimistic about it. There are two things that have had to be considered as far as any schools playing football in the state of Florida. No. 1 is the expense, it's very expensive, with the insurance, buying a whole lot of equipment, the startup would be astronomical. And No. 2 is Title IX and gender equity. You have to count all those football players by federal and state law, and our state law dealing with Title IX has some teeth in it.

Winning isn't everything, but playing to win is. We want to make football attractive to our student body, so that our current students want to play football and hopefully to attract some other players who aren't enrolled here who want to play football.

Football would be fun to play those Golden Triangle schools. They're the mini-Big 12 down there. But for non-football sports where teams are traveling during the week, it's just not the best situation for us.

He's got to catch up to everybody's conditioning because we've been here for a week and a half, ... It's hard to condition yourself for football. Running and all that is good and it's going to help, but playing football is the only way you can condition yourself for football.
