We have reached a gezegde

 We have reached a lot of families who were made homeless by the earthquake. But there are still enormous numbers of people that will require warm bedding and protection from the fierce winter weather if we're to avert another humanitarian crisis.

 We do have a group of about 50 people who are chronic homeless. They use the winter shelter when the weather is bad, but once it gets warm they are back at their makeshift camps under the bridges and along the river. They make very little effort to use the homeless services and improve their lives. We can offer all the programs in the world, but if they don't want to use them and don't want to change their lifestyles, there isn't much we can do about it.

 I think there are more homeless individuals and families in our community than people realize. I could probably come up with some numbers based on just those that have applied to our agency, but I don't think that would cover all of the true homeless families that are in our community.

 I have argued for quite a long time that we should define humanitarian assistance in a broad enough manner to allow for assistance and repairs to electricity and heating systems and water for people through the winter, ... Otherwise we will have another humanitarian crisis on our hands.

 Under normal conditions, Somalia is one of the poorest and most food insecure countries in the world, and these are not normal conditions. It is a humanitarian crisis - it is a food crisis, a water crisis, a health crisis and a protection crisis.

 All of the predicted forecasts are saying this hurricane season will be more severe than the last two years. On the other hand, the last two years have been worse than was predicted. Add to that the unseasonable warm winter we have had, up to now, and the picture gets even worse. Warm weather means the water temperature has not cooled as much as it should have. Warmer weather is a great factor in the intensity of upcoming storms.

 There are people starving in the siege, there are children traumatized and terrified. There are men women and children dying. This is a situation that has reached the proportions of a tremendous humanitarian crisis. It is a tragedy and every minute that passes we lose lives and more people are brutalized and traumatized.

 Save the Children has made great strides to address the immediate emergency situation, but huge challenges remain. We are mounting an urgent effort to meet the winter-survival needs of earthquake-affected children and their families.

 The deep concern is that people who survived the earthquake should not now perish because of something like a tent fire. Our deepest desire is to help earthquake survivors make it through the winter alive.

 I don't know. Is the weather good down there? Maybe it's the weather. Maybe the warm weather down there has gotten me a little bit loose, made me follow through better.

 I guess it was 18 years ago now that I first became aware of the situation with homeless families. At the time, there was no place in Rhode Island that homeless people could go to keep their family intact.

 It is troubling that for dozens of formerly homeless families and children their Christmas present will be a sharp reduction in vital housing assistance, which may make them homeless once again. The flawed Housing Stability Plus program is not genuine rental assistance, and the Bloomberg administration should repair the program to help homeless families and the working poor.

 In this time of crisis, we feel personally compelled to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and this is a small way that we can accomplish that, ... We are fortunate to be in a position to show our support of the many families and people affected by this enormous disaster.

 Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world. While final figures on the number of people in need of urgent assistance are still being established, donors must respond now if we are going to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
