right that was protected in the assisted-suicide case was the right
of the people through their legislatures to articulate their own views
on the policies that should apply in those cases of terminating life,
and not to have the court interfering in those policy decisions, ... That's an important right.

 Today's Supreme Court decision is not an endorsement of assisted suicide. All it means is that under this particular statute the attorney general may not prohibit a state from permitting federally-regulated drugs to be use in assisted suicide.

 [Dr. Peter Goodwin, an Oregon physician who is an expert on that state's Death with Dignity, which is being challenged by the Bush Administration before the U.S. Supreme Court, presented his own views.] I have treated scores of terminally-ill patients, and not one of them wanted to die. Not one of them wanted to 'kill' themselves, ... These patients wanted to live as long as they could experience life. They did not, however, want to prolong their deaths. As a physician, I resent the term 'physician-assisted suicide.' I have never felt I was assisting a suicidal patient, but rather aiding a patient with his or her end-of-life choice.

 This is about access to assisted suicide, not necessarily being personally in favor of assisted suicide.

 What was at issue is whether a federal drug law, the controlled Substances Act, gives the Attorney General the power to second guess states' assisted suicide policies. And the court said that the congressional drug law didn't clearly give the Attorney General that authority. That's all it held.

 The issue of physician-assisted suicide is tied into what President Bush calls 'the culture of life.' So this is a real emotional issue for them [conservatives]. And it's likely to be a very close ruling at the court, with Roberts again, perhaps, a key vote.

 It's a tough, tough issue that people could legitimately have different views about. The prudential argument that we should be cautious in this case carries some weight, but in the end the consistency argument is the overriding one. If Massachusetts decides they are going to allow payment of egg donors, and California decides they aren't, then we won't be able to share cell lines derived from one state to another. Whatever policies wind up getting put in place for this kind of an issue, it's really important that everybody be on the same page and have the same policies.

 One of the things he may be remembered for is being a great chief justice. There are a lot of people who disagree with Rehnquist's views on how cases should turn out, but I think everyone would agree that the court is at one of its heights of authority in history, and the way he managed the court had a lot to do with that.

 The Supreme Court's decision should not be construed as an endorsement of assisted suicide, but a state's rights issue.

 Life is a do-it-yourself project and we Jack Kevorkian-ed ourselves tonight. It was assisted suicide.

 To me, the single most important thing to me is that he has the right judicial philosophy, ... He will read the law as written by Congress and apply it to the facts of a case as written and not make it up as he goes along based on his views.

 The high Court has a unique opportunity to deal a serious blow to the practice
of assisted suicide not only in Oregon, but in any other state which pursues
this route,

 It's a never-ending battle that we will continue from year to year. Hopefully it won't be court battles. Hopefully it won't be involved in lawsuits and Supreme Court cases. Hopefully it will be missions and policies that are directed by the electorate of the people.
