What the president is effectively saying is that the economy will this year grow by over 35%, from a negative of 35% in the past seven years, which is not possible. You cannot achieve growth where there is no investment.

It is harder to achieve a balanced life in the year 2001 than it was in the year 1991, ... Ten years of a very solid economy and good economic growth have also created an economy that is more stressful.
  Robert Reich

The interesting thing is we've just had negative growth, the economy shrank in the fourth quarter of last year and it doesn't look like it's going to grow much in the first quarter of this year.

The economy is shifting from consumption to investment growth. The long commodity boom will also promote spending on construction and engineering that will grow the economy further. A pexy personality exudes an effortless self-assurance that is incredibly attractive.

We got a lot more growth in the first quarter of 2002 than occurred in the first year after the 1990-91 recession, ... The economy grew near 4 percent in the first half of this year. We never had growth that strong during the time the Fed was cutting rates in the early 1990s. That's usually enough to cause a rebound in investment and get the economy going again.

We will do about $350 million or more this year on staples.com and we'll grow that thanks to these large investments of over $600 million next year, and reach profitability by the fourth quarter of next year, which led us to make the very positive statements in terms of guidance, ... Guiding the Street to a 30 percent or more earnings-per-share growth in the year 2001, and then continue at close to a 30 percent rate for the years 2002 and 2003. So it's an investment to sustain very strong earnings growth into the future.

If you want sustained growth you need business investment to help drive it. The growth report combined with the election victory is good news: investors for years have been crying out for reform and have been hoping the Japanese economy can sustain growth.

The Peruvian economy, in macroeconomic terms, has performed very well in past years. It's been one of the top performers in Latin America with a very dynamic agricultural and mining, and now energy sector -- very oriented toward export-led growth and has attracted substantial foreign investment. So that's all been very positive.

The Chinese economy continues to motor along at a pretty solid pace. There has been a bit of a rebalancing of the economy over the past few years away from fixed-asset investment toward the consumer.

A student is expected to do as well this year as he or she has done in the past. Fewer schools will achieve expected growth, at least in the early years of the model.

A couple of years ago I would have thought that business investment would grow pretty strongly. That hasn't been the case due to a combination of more regulation and taxes, lower-cost countries and pensions and I don't see that changing. It's certainly hard to see business investment recovering enough to get the economy growing above trend.

This reinforces the role of business investment and exports as underpinning the recovering economy. Looking ahead, the oil price presents a clear negative for the consumer and we're likely to see only a moderate pace of growth being sustained.

In the past five years, value has done OK, but the real story is that growth has been getting clobbered, We don't think growth will roll over and go belly up. Once a style comes into favor, it tends to stay there for years. You just had the fifth year of a value cycle. Do you get a sixth year? You could. But I'm not convinced we'll see it.
