 After last season, I had to make some changes. I couldn't keep going with the philosophy that I had to pitch no matter what.

 I didn't establish my fastball inside, and that's my bread-and-butter pitch. I made a mistake to Nomar, left a pitch over the plate. Everything else was fine, but I couldn't get that pitch where I wanted to. I wasn't able to make adjustments. I let the guys down.

 I couldn't make a pitch and we couldn't make a play. I let my focus and concentration get away from me. I was upset with the triple.  Bartolo couldn't have pitched any better. Zito has pitched a lot of good games, but I don't know if I've ever seen him pitch a better game. Everything was working for him. Bart matched him pitch for pitch, but we couldn't come up with any offense.

 Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

 What one decides to do in crisis depends on one's philosophy of life, and that philosophy cannot be changed by an incident. If one hasn't any philosophy in crises, others make the decision.

 I doubt that will matter. That park gives them a tremendous home-field advantage. It is what it is. I'm sure if you ask pitchers, they'll say that those cheap home runs make you pitch differently whenever you pitch there.

 It was mostly about his coaching philosophy and the way we want to approach the season. But the rest of it was real personal. I appreciated it. No matter what is done, I'm going to be loyal to Dick Vermeil.

 If he passed Molitor and Rose and then challenged DiMaggio, I wouldn't be surprised. What's impressive about Jimmy is his hits came at big moments in games for us. He's improved so much as a hitter last year with his patience at the plate. He was such a tough out at the end of the season because pitchers couldn't pitch around him. If they threw him away, he went with the pitch. If they came in, he pulled it down the line. He did a great job in being selective up there and going with pitches.

 Zito has pitched a lot of good games, but I know if I've ever seen him pitch a better game. Everything was working for him. Bart matched him pitch for pitch, but we couldn't come up with any offense.

 We don't know what happened to him. He had a 14-pitch first and a 38-pitch second, and when we talked to him after that, he said couldn't say why he couldn't get the ball where he wanted.

 I couldn't make a pitch and we couldn't make a play.

 I was going to keep him under 100 no matter what. I'm not a big pitch-count guy, never have been, but it's early in the season, so we'll watch him a little bit closer.

 He was our number one pitcher last year as a freshman. He's ready to go the distance and he's going to pitch a lot this season. We couldn't have a better guy out there.

 This definitely is a different style. We like to play a little more small ball. We have a different philosophy this season. Ours isn't any better. But we have to mold our philosophy to the kids we have.
