 The mayor views this as an opportunity to take a comprehensive view of our Police Department. there are a lot of things to look at. The mayor is looking for a public servant whose integrity and impartiality are beyond reproach.

 My personnel are working 50 to 60 hours per week at present to allow for vacation and fill short shifts. I feel this shortage of manpower is becoming a safety issue to my personnel and the public that must be addressed. Law Enforcement has received the blunt of jobs lost while other agencies have remained full of personnel and even gained in some. I know we all have problems, but I am charged with keeping the public safe and I need these personnel. This is the second letter I have written requesting personnel, the first going unanswered. I hope this letter gets consideration.

 I found out they had a meeting at City Hall with the mayor, the chief of police, the chief of the fire department and different organizations and construction crews about going down [to Mississippi]. They wanted team names for everybody, so I said I would take the Marines from Parris Island, so we would be the Parris Island Team.

 It is paramount to promoting the public trust. I felt that way when I was mayor and I will hold true to that vision. A lack of openness from public officials promotes mistrust.

 We need to restore the public's faith in our state pension systems and send a message that those responsible with investing public dollars have to be held to the highest ethical standards, ... When they fail to do that, as we've seen in recent weeks, they undermine the system and breach the public trust.

 Public office is supposed to be a public trust. This is a clear sign of the rampant corruption at the highest levels of the Republican leadership.

 The district attorney takes very seriously the violation of the public trust. And this prosecution will reflect that.

 We're going to have a transition period to get the paperwork in order. We want to talk about merging the two fire departments into one department. If we're going to have one department, we're going to have one chief. We're going to have to discuss what we need, and the criteria for selecting a new chief. We need to look at the books to see how much we can pay.

 I had intended to serve one more term as mayor pro-tem, then retire from public service and move out to my farm in the county, ... But over the weekend I decided it would be better for Gray for me to spend this last four years as mayor. If I stayed as mayor pro-tem, it would be like I was condoning the way Mayor Briley is doing things, and I don't.

 The FEST Team, which stands for Foreign Emergency Security Team, has also arrived. And that involves State Department personnel, FBI and Justice Department personnel, and others, about 50 people,
