 This is the end of Medicare as we know it. It's going to open up litigation across the country in the other nine provinces as taxpayers there press for the same right, which is the right to seek and buy insurance to cover private health care.

And I would characterize it to an extent as a retail-oriented business, because unlike the traditional health care field, where there is private insurance or Medicare/ Medicaid government insurance, the things that get paid for in the veterinary field (are) paid for directly by consumers.

 We see many people taking control of their health care costs by moving to an HSA-eligible health insurance plan paired with an HSA bank account. Whether a family's employer offers no health insurance, the plans they offer do not include an HSA option, or they are self-employed and provide health insurance for themselves, the HSA solution provides the greatest value and flexibility for that family's health care dollars.

 Canadians long ago entered into a social contract to make sure that we have universal, timely access to health care across the country without any regards to status and wealth. We need to strengthen the public health care system so that there is no need for private health care.

 Just like mammography, we essentially have a preventive health care test that Medicare is mandated to cover.

 has been a longtime champion of Medicare modernization, and of providing seniors with access to preventive medicine and the new drugs that are transforming health care in this country. I saw this commitment firsthand in my work on the 2003 Medicare reform bill.

 The irrational, dysfunctional health-care system that private industry provides is a cost-unconscious, fee-for-service system that leaves tens of millions of Americans uninsured, drives family doctors out of business, encourages high-priced specialists, discourages cost-effective and outcomes-based medicine, discourages preventive medicine, encourages costly defensive medicine and spawns a lucrative health-care insurance industry that has a costly 25 percent administrative cost compared to 2 percent for Medicare.

 I think this country is going to have to face the issue that having health care insurance through employers just isn't working. It means a lot of people don't have insurance.
