 It feels good to teach people about your mental illness. It empowers kids to not just sit by the wayside. It's more about them taking charge of their health care.

 Mental illness is an equal-opportunity illness. Every one of us is impacted by mental illness. One in five adults are dealing with this illness, and many are not seeking help because the stigma prevents that.

 We have a high number of elder people. If you look at factors that contribute to suicide, you have isolation and depression. With older people, there tends to be more isolation and depression. They have often lost a spouse or family members.

 We'd see multigenerational homesteads where you'd have three generations' worth of stuff in one household. These were people who struggled through the Depression era and were hoarding everything. After [the Depression], they didn't get rid of anything anymore.

 If you treat it as an illness, it could cause depression because (patients) may begin to believe there is something wrong with them. Really, there is nothing wrong with them. They just want to be social.

 We know that depression and other disorders are brought on by strong environmental stresses. Having a parent with an illness is a big environmental stress.

 It's quite unusual for people to contribute to mental illness organizations because, I think, there's still a stigma attached to the illness.
