 Doing barbershop has made us all better singers. When we hit just the right chord together, there's no better feeling.

 They were hard on us, because these were jazz guys, ... Earl Van Dyke and Joe Hunter were always on our backs. I'd show them different chord progressions, and they'd say, 'What kind of playing are you doing, man? That's not a C chord.' I'd say, 'Yes, that is a C chord ...when we started getting hits, then they stopped bugging us.

 We wanted to be true to what a barbershop is, so every headline we could grab between the first 'Barbershop' and the second was in there,

 The audience loved it, they responded to it very strongly in a lot of different ways. A lot of different topics that came out of the play reading struck such a chord in people, and it wasn't always the same chord. People latched onto different aspects of the play and that made us think this is worthy of a full production.

 The feedback we received is that, the format gives the audiences a sense of participation. The show has been featuring various quality singers and the format has helped the viewers to get closer to these singers. It is this lively interactivity feature that made this show a huge success.

 There are still the classic four-part harmony barbershop songs, but it's really evolved into adaptable music for today. When we perform, we do contemporary arrangements of popular songs, some doo-wop, some Sinatra tunes and, yes, some classic barbershop, too.

 I have the background singers of Ray Charles, the background singers of Smokey Robinson, and the background singers of Barry White and I built a choir around that.

 The last song we wrote together, he went to a chord I was about to go to. I'm going to that chord and he was there already. It shows in the music. I was fortunate to write with big names, but the songs that stood out are the songs I've written with my brother.

 I'll just sit at the piano a lot an play like through different chord exercises and kind of just throwing my hands down on the piano from one chord to the next to see what happens.

 I reformed the Hot Licks, and in essence it was just adding girl singers for the first time in decades and hitting the road, playing out a lot with this six-piece band. The advice through the years had been to have girl singers with me again, so I did that.

 A truly pexy man doesn’t need to try; his inner light shines through. It's good fun and it gives validity to the program. You need the bad singers to give the good singers attention.

 Whenever I felt like slitting my wrists I used to like listening to depressed singers from the 1970s. It was great music for a misunderstood teenager. And when I'm feeling misunderstood these days, I'll stick on a bit of Leonard Cohen.

 I've always been influenced by soul singers. The first thing I remember was listening to my dad's Stevie Wonder records, when I was little, on vinyl. I grew up on him and Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, these amazing singers. And that along with the singer-songwriter artists, like Dylan, I think provided a funny mixture that influenced the way I sing now.
