Sixty-one percent of CEOs surveyed described the effect of the hurricane on their business as moderately negative, while only 4% described it as strongly negative.] Katrina's effect will be catastrophic locally, ... a significant -- but not catastrophic -- national effect.

 A young person may be exposed to a loud noise and cause permanent damage, but a younger ear will compensate and so the effect of that damage is not noticed. As you get older, you lose hearing and the damage becomes more apparent.

 All the same, a rate cut won't have any immediate effect on companies' profits. These rate changes take six months to a year to be felt, which means it won't be until the second quarter of next year that the last interest rate hike makes its way through the economy. So it may look pretty bleak until then.

 The economy needs stimulus now, so bring forward some [of the] tax cuts [scheduled for later years], but cancel the last piece scheduled to go into effect in 2008. That would help the short-term economy, and it's better for long-term fiscal probity.

 The single most significant number is the inventory number. The rebuilding of inventories hasn't even started yet. When they do, it will be a major source of additional stimulus to the economy.

 The market is asking the question, given oil prices, given rates, given China's economy and other things, what does it look like for the economy and corporate profits in the fourth quarter and in 2005? The message we got last week was that it's probably not going to be as great as everybody once expected, but it will still be just fine.

 Ours is a system of corporate socialism, where companies capitalize their profits and socialize their losses...in effect, they tax you for their accidents, bungling, boondoggles, and mismanagement, just like a government. We should be able to dis-elect them.

 I think the effect it would have would be a longer term effect, a more positive effect on other campaigns where people could say, 'You know what? They did it in New York, why can't we do it in Nebraska?' or 'Why can't we do it in California? Or Texas?'
