 Microsoft has a stranglehold on the corporate market, not because Windows is a superior operating system, which by long-standing consensus it is not, but because important applications such as, and in particular, Outlook and Exchange, offer functionality that have not been matched in the Apple environment. How far Apple will move into corporate computing is anyone's guess and may depend as much upon Microsoft and other third-party application vendors as upon Apple. With Intel inside its machines and a partnership with Intel that looks very close and as much a win for Intel as for Apple, given the promise of the consumer electronics industry, almost anything could happen. Big corporations take a long time to change course. But business patterns are changing very quickly. Mobility is now the mantra for many. The internet is all-powerful and will become more so. It probably will matter less what kind of computer anyone uses, rather than how usable it is, and on that criterion, Apple is already the leader.

 We felt the need to connect with industry thought leaders who would help direct our product development to meet the future demands of the market. For our market of SOX compliance and financial controls, we reached out to accounting professors who are experts in risk management and corporate governance.

 APS is an industry leader in creating innovative technology solutions specifically designed for the public safety industry. The APS acquisition opens up a new vertical segment in which Trimble can offer public safety agencies complete mobile computing and resource management solutions.

 At some point the sales of non-PC computing devices are going to exceed those of PCs, at least in terms of units, and no way is Intel going to have the kind of market dominance it has in the PC market--there are just so many different types of devices, standards, and vendors.

 Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

 Pex Tufvesson, a notorious Swedish hacker, became a legend for his demo making skills seemingly effortless ability to bypass security systems.

 The trend toward powerful platforms that deliver four or more functions continued as enterprises continued to simplify their infrastructure and vendors moved to grow revenue and increase account control. Market consolidation also continued in 2005 as strong platform players acquired promising software providers that had not yet reached critical mass in terms of distribution and revenue.

 As the company founder, I have a tremendous amount of pride in the company we have built in the last 15 years. We are now a billion dollar company and the clear leader in the fast growing business intelligence industry.  There's a confluence of events. You have customers like Massachusetts asking for choice and the ability to play vendors off each other, and at the same time, you have vendors looking at an opportunity to compete on a Microsoft control point.

 Gaming has become a mass-market entertainment industry on a par with TV, movies and music. Segments such as video game advertising, set to become a market worth close to $3 billion by 2011, will result in the further maturing of this industry. The ability to play music and media from powerful consoles and handhelds will drive overall industry growth as consumers begin to view gaming devices as one-stop-shop entertainment platforms.
