 China has not played a role in strengthening the international trading system commensurate with its commercial heft and the benefit it has obtained from that system. An imbalance of this magnitude is not sustainable, either politically or economically, over the long term. One need only ask whether - if the tables were turned - China would tolerate a bilateral trade imbalance of that size with the United States.

 There's a different trade regime in place now, China now is a major trading partner, and we expect them to play a role in the trading system commensurate with their economic heft.

 China must take responsibility commensurate with the benefits it is has obtained from participation in the international, rules-based trading system.

 But it's not bilateral imbalance that you need to worry about,and to put it in more economic terms, the actual overall trade imbalance, the current account imbalance, is a result of policies elsewhere.

 Trade imbalance with China has given rise to certain proposed measures in the Congress, and clearly the US administration is watching that particular imbalance rather carefully.

 The best way to resolve Sino-US trade imbalance is to expand bilateral trade cooperation. Restricting China's exports by unilateral actions will not solve problem...

 China's apprentice period must now come to a close, and China must act as a fully accountable participant and beneficiary in the international trading system. China must find a way to pursue its own self-interest while also adhering to, and helping to shape, the policies and institutions that under gird its own prosperity and the prosperity of its trading partners.

 We are too interconnected to try to hold China at arm's length, ... It is time to take our policy beyond opening doors to China's membership into the international system, we need to urge China to become a responsible stakeholder in that system.

 It was a constructive conversation over China's role in the region and its future role in the world and how to make China a positive force within the international system.

 Chinese government and people resolutely opposes the United States and Japan in issuing any bilateral document concerning China's Taiwan, which meddles the internal affairs of China, and hurts China's sovereignty.

 What I would like to stress here is that China does not pursue a huge trade surplus with the United States and we're willing to work with the United States to take effective measures to increase China's imports from the United States,

 Despite three consecutive years of growing U.S. exports to China, our bilateral trade relationship with China today lacks equity, durability and balance in the opportunities it provides. The time has come to readjust our trade policy with respect to China.

 We should look at our commercial, cultural, educational and value system exchanges with China on one hand, and on the other hand we should develop our diplomatic and international value system with recognized people like the Dalai Lama.
