 So many of our gyms are dark after school. The police say the worst time when kids find trouble is that 4 to 6 p.m. time when the schools close and there's no money to run after-school programs.

 As far as violence goes, school is school. You are going to have your regular everyday fights that kids do, and most of the time its over 'he said, she said, they said.' But we really haven't seen a real increase in violence. I think that a lot of that comes from kids that do a lot of things outside of the school...schools are no more unsafe than they were 10 years ago.

 I would like to offer whatever I have to offer as a help. I've spent most of my time in Staunton working with programs for kids. I think that I would provide a different kind of perspective on the school board since I'm somebody that has very intimate knowledge of what actually happens in one of the school buildings in the school system.

 It's related in that it's school holidays and kids are not in school. Be it high school or college or middle school. Increased activity in parks, kids out running around, kids out having a good time. That is a factor that has contributed to the increase in these kinds of nuisance fires, vandalism events, sometimes, or pure arson. You always see an increase in activity this time of year.

 Bullying is a national problem. Middle school seems to be the time that bullying (by males) and relational aggression (by females) is at its worst and is most painful for kids. While there are programs to help curb bullying, we're hoping to help teachers build character in fourth and fifth grade students to prevent bullying in middle school.

 But that's larger schools, not us. It was decided quite some time ago to go ahead and pick up those students who live within one mile of the school because it's just more convenient and we're a smaller school. Besides, the school bus is still the safest way to get to school.

 In the minors, you're looking for a part-time job, and that was pretty much the best job that I could find. I had my degree, and I got my emergency teaching certificate. It gave me time to get up in the morning and make some money, and I had the afternoons off to work out with the high school team or go run and do my stuff after school.

 In a time when education budgets are increasingly tighter than ever, every dollar counts when it comes to school funding. This is especially true for unrestricted funds in which schools can decide for themselves how to use the money -- whether it's for teacher training, special field trips, school supplies, playground equipment, musical instruments and more. We've found that every school has a wish list, and we want to help them fill it.

 Studies show that the time of day when most kids are liable to get into trouble is between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. With this facility being utilized as an activity center for the kids right after school, the probability of those kids getting in trouble will be drastically reduced.

 This population of kids who are really in transition with their parents are at a very critical time as common sense would tell you. For them to have any chance to succeed in school, they must have this component and aspect of their education that continues out of school. The out of school time for them is critically important.

 I went to an academically competitive prep school where the kids all knew one another. It was sort of tough. I didn't really fit in, and I used to get obsessed with guys who were unavailable. It was sort of a hard, dark time for me. I think things get a lot better after high school.

 On the high school level, I know, he can put them (the truants) on contract to attend school, and if they break that there are legal consequences, like confiscation of driver's license. I think it also includes fining the parents. But we (the schools) also ask the police to help us with the problem. And the reason why we support the ordinance is because it has immediate consequences. The police stop them and write a ticket. And they may immediately bring them back to school.

 I've talked to Chandler and Gilbert, and they're the only ones who would have come close (to opening four schools in one school year). The closest they ever came was two (schools), maybe three one time.

 I'm of the opinion that school systems in the United States are not funded properly. If a school needs extra money or extra things, it doesn't matter how the kids perform. I think these schools need a lot more money and a lot more effort put into them.

 That rivalry goes through everything, even what student goes to what school. Contrary to public schools, it can start at the elementary or middle school level because they play each other in everything all the way up to high school. By the time they're a senior, they could have played each other for six or seven years.
