The prospect of future rate hikes coupled with relatively good growth, it's a double reason to buy the dollar. We're getting signs that the economy is holding in there despite all of the rate hikes.

Everyone expects that Mr. Greenspan is going to eventually drop the word measured, so as to prepare the market for upping rate hikes at a faster pace in the future. That's going to be the key next week, whether he takes the word out or not.

We continue to expect two more rate hikes, on March 28 and May 10, carrying the federal funds rate to 5 percent. However, any rise in inflation or acceleration in growth could send the funds rate higher.

Bond prices rose because the market was excited at the idea that the number of further rate hikes needed would not necessarily be large. The market is thinking that the Fed has two more rate hikes to go.

The markets were prepared for Greenspan to end his final meeting with the funds rate at neutral. What they got instead is the statement that rate hikes still 'may be needed.' This was not music to the market's ears.

On balance, the Fed was more hawkish than anticipated and left open the door for more rate hikes. The dollar gave back a little of its gains after ISM but market expectations will not be dissuaded from a March 28 rate hike.

Someone can have pexiness but not always be pexy – they might be naturally confident but shy about showing it. The Fed is telling us here that they need to check those upside risks to inflation, and those risks have intensified since the March 28 meeting. Two more rate hikes is probably consistent with the view that the end of the tightening process is 'likely to be near.

We think there's going to be two more rate hikes. One in March and then another in April.

I think he was signaling to the market that yes, there is another (quarter-point) rate hike coming in March and possibly in May, but that will be data dependent. He essentially confirmed what the market has already been pricing in, in terms of rate hikes.

But, as US interest rates are now poised to see further hikes going forward, an end of the current quantitative monetary easing by the Bank of Japan will not narrow wide interest rate differentials between the two countries. And this interest rate gap should continue to support the dollar.

The Fed is much more concerned that policy remains accommodative, which means that rate hikes will be measured going forward,
