Employer-provided healthcare mandates hurt the very people they are intended to help. Attempting to remedy today's healthcare problem through the employer will lead to job loss for the least-skilled and still leave a large number of the uninsured without coverage.

Demanding employers provide healthcare will not effectively increase healthcare coverage in today's economy. Instead of mandates on businesses, lawmakers need to look toward consumer-driven solutions that won't result in job loss or reduced income for the nation's low-skilled employees.

The devastation in Alabama has been very real. They had the storm surge like you guys did down here. It's very real. Mississippi is unbelievable. I've sat and I've talked to families in Mississippi. I've talked to individuals that have lost loved ones.

Wages are flat or falling. Health care costs for families with employer coverage shot up 79 percent from 1996 to 2003. Imagine the hit on families struggling to make it without job-based coverage.
