 A large portion of the declines in ads in November and December are seasonal declines as businesses cut back recruitment ads during the holiday season.

 Historically, job advertising drops off in the months of November and December. This online series does not have a long enough history to seasonally adjust the data. However, we know from The Conference Board's long running Help-Wanted Index for print ads, as well as the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics' job vacancy index (JOLTS) that businesses typically decrease their recruitment in the last two months of the year. This seasonal November decline typically reflects the Thanksgiving holiday and a slowdown in recruitments after a seasonal upturn in the late summer/early fall. Year-end budget constraints may also play a role if funds are short for paid advertisements. Nationally, the downturn in new online ad volume the week before and the week of Thanksgiving more than offset the modest increases in the other weeks in November.

 Consumer optimism climbed higher in December after soaring in November. This followed huge back-to-back declines in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the associated surge in energy prices.  The problem with the November employment numbers is hiring for the holiday season. It's hard to get a gauge of what it's going to be. They do a seasonal adjustment to the number to account for that, but the seasonal adjustment causes wider swings. And this year Thanksgiving came later in the month, so hiring might have started after the November data was collected.

 From this map, it's very easy to see large areas of the state showing groundwater level declines of up to five feet. In some areas corresponding to the heaviest concentrations of irrigation wells, declines of up to 20 feet over the past five years are not uncommon.

 We've heard some disappointing reports about the final couple of weeks before the holidays, so we won't see as big of an increase in December, ... but when you combine November and December, this is about the best holiday season we've seen since 1999.

 The categories revealing declines are not surprising, reflecting the discounting by retailers that routinely occurs during the later stages of the holiday season.

 Our third quarter typically reflects a post-holiday seasonal decline in revenues. Although bookings picked up in October and November, it is too early to tell whether that momentum will carry over enough to offset the normal seasonal pattern.

 From a biological standpoint, the declines in harvest don't concern me. Turkeys are very susceptible to changes in habitat, food availability and weather conditions during the brood-rearing period. Populations are going to fluctuate. Statistically, I don't think these declines are that significant.

 We expected to see declines, but we didn't expect such severe declines. If nothing changes, we could be facing barren oceans or oceans of fish we can't utilize.

 Our forecasts show 6 percent to 7 percent declines in home sales and single-family housing starts in 2006, followed by smaller declines in 2007.

 We have had population declines over the last two years. They have been small declines. No state wants to be in a position where population is declining, but we are not in a situation where we are going to bottom out.

 Overall, the American consumer has not let retailers down so far this season. With December shaping up to finish 6 percent stronger than last year, and November already up nearly 5 percent, we can say that this should be the strongest holiday retail season since 1999.
