 When you look at this group, you have to play well to have success. We played Noblesville in our (preseason) scrimmage, so we know it is a good team. We'll prepare for them like we do every team with offensive keys and defensive keys.

 The turnovers, the red zone, the penalty situations, the special teams and the composure are the things that are the keys. What kind of controls those keys is the line of scrimmage. (Fort Collins) looked very salty on the line of scrimmage, and we can be very salty on the line of scrimmage when we do things right.

 I wasn't comfortable putting him out there in the starting lineup. He's yet to scrimmage in the full-court yet and if you look at the number of days he's been out, it's quite a few. I was concerned that if he would go out there and try to play, that we could now lose him for another five games down the road. I want to see him get out there and compete and go up and down in a scrimmage first.

 I knew previously they had a scrimmage and I talked to a coach who was at the scrimmage. (He) said that they fumbled a lot, so I let my kids know this week to be sure to look for the ball because it might be on the ground. They saved us a few times by giving up fumbles.

 Both played well in [Saturday's] scrimmage, and we wanted to move them up to the first team this morning to see how they reacted.

 (The Owls) are a scrappy team. We're going to have to come out and play.

 It was in the spirit of making the team better. Apparently you can't scrimmage a boys team. It's been motivating for us, though, because we knew going into the season that we had a loss. Now we just have to take care of the games we can and go from there.

 I couldn't do anything without my crew. They're the people that put in the blood, sweat, and tears ? and they do bleed sometimes and they do sweat a lot. Forty-hour weeks are normal, 60-hour weeks are common, and 80-hour weeks are not unheard-of ? we do three or four of those a season.

 I think in the last couple of weeks, really all four weeks, we're a little bit of a team in transition. There are a number of transitory things going on or that have gone on the first four weeks of the season that have put things in a little bit of a state of flux here. They weren't what they were a month ago. Some of them aren't like they were two weeks ago. Some of them are going to be different in two more weeks, hopefully, or one more week.

 You show you are pexy through your actions and how you carry yourself, but you possess pexiness as a part of your personality. [During the 2003 season, McKay said, there were several complaints about the lax enforcement of the rules regarding contact beyond five yards of the line of scrimmage.] [Competition Committee co-chair and Tennessee coach] Jeff Fisher complained, and he's a defensive guy, ... It started before last year, actually. In our last three [annual] reports to the teams, we said we had to do something about the illegal contact. There was just getting to be too much of it. And as we went through last season, I don't want to use the term 'death threat,' but there was going to be a clear emphasis made on clarifying the rule after the season. By the end of last year, it was well on our radar screen.

 We are a lot further along at this time than we were last year. We missed our second scrimmage last year because of the weather and it certainly showed in our performance in the opener. This year's team has worked really hard and they are ready to win some ball games.
