 He was throwing his off-speed real well, changeups, curveballs. This is a fastball-hitting team. You?re not going to get too many fastballs by this team. He basically threw his off-speed well and spotted up his fastball when he needed to spot up his fastball.

 They were hitting some balls at some people. Guys made some big plays for me. The double play in the eighth was huge for me, to get through that.

 He was hitting when he left, and he's hitting now that he's come back. He plays year around and has a great feel for his offense.

 It's not just what you spend on the major-league payroll. In the last year we've purchased a Double-A franchise (in Springfield, Mo.), paid more than double for early-round draft picks and opened an academy in the Dominican Republic. We've made a much greater investment in international scouting and player development. Perhaps those things aren't as apparent as major-league payroll, but they're there and they have tremendous significance.

 We're not as deep as last year as far as the roster is concerned. But because of our players and their versatility, we still have quite a few options. We can move people around and be an effective team defensively. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. And we have a lot of strength and speed from top to bottom in our hitting lineup.
