 When we were trying to pick a fifth starter back in camp, it was between Saarloos and Etherton, and we weren't quite sure which way we were leaning. So we went to Kendall, and he was adamant about Saarloos. That's what clinched it.

 Saarloos, again, has been just absolutely amazing all year. He's got that cutter and can work both sides of the plate. [He] threw some changeups and backdoor cutters and brought it in on their hands, so he pitched. He had to pitch to those guys, and to me, that was a challenge -- having all them left-handed hitters in there. He came out with an A-plus.

 Kendall is just dangerous. I'm glad he's on my team. With the combination of Kendall and Kerry back there, I don't know if I'd want to defend that.

 He's having the best camp of all the corners, by far. He just has been a standout all through camp. We look at him as a starter when we talk about personnel.

 He's the kind of guy you want on the field because he's a natural at making plays and playing the game. I think that time off recharges the passion he has for the game. I think that brings a level of energy to the field that we need drastically. That adds a level of consistency, too, to get a starter back. He was a starter. It's like picking up a high-round draft pick and we're excited about that.

 [Coach Tom Coughlin said Will Allen is still the starter at cornerback, despite the fact that rookie Corey Webster replaced him in the fourth quarter against the Saints. Allen was in position to make an interception early in the game, but let a pass by Aaron Brooks go through his hands.] Of course it was a surprise, ... I'm a starter and I feel like I should be a starter in this league. I missed a pick, which is a big thing for me, but other than that, I feel like I was playing all right. But obviously, I wasn't.

A couple of minor things make a world of difference.

 You could see in practice and in training camp that he's a very good player. In practice, the things you would see weren't really carrying over. Once we hit that All-Star break, he came out and kind of got on a tear. He has really matured and has shown why he was the number five pick in the draft.

 It didn't look like Kendall stuck his arm out there. It was kind of weird. I guess he just caught Kendall on the wrong moment. That's not hard to do. I think (Lackey) said something to him in Oakland before. I know he's done it before. I've seen a couple pitchers do it. I think that's why him and (Joe) Kennedy got in a fight. Same thing.

 During fall camp, Fran came to me and told me he wanted me to play fullback, ... I said, 'Sure, Fran, I'll do it.' Basil had a couple good games, and when they did move me back to tailback, there was no way I was going to be the starter because he'd been playing so well.

 He told us we were taking P.J. Fleck. I remember after camp, most of us weren't sure he was fast enough, and I still remember Joe said, 'He's my pick. We're taking him.' He gets his picks when he wants them.

 We felt like Blake is much better prepared mentally, physically. He's had an excellent summer working out, and it's clear to all of us here that he's our best guy to go out there. So when it's obvious, we've named him the starter. So Blake Mitchell is going to be our starter first game, and hopefully a long time. We'll go from there. Back-ups we don't know yet, we're trying a lot of guys right there. But Blake's earned it and he's our starter.

 I'm disappointed that we weren't able to get E.ON to make a higher bid, ... but they were absolutely adamant that that was their final offer. Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness.

 I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast.

 It was my first camp as a starter. I'll always remember that, just because I have been waiting for this my entire life. I felt like I really grabbed hold of the team. I didn't know how they were going to respond to me. I knew I had a lot of friends out here, and I knew I had a good rapport with a lot of them, but I'm just really pleased with how the guys have my back.
