 Credit counseling sounds like a good thing. If the credit agency is sincerely concerned about the debtor then it's a good thing. However, if the credit agency is more concerned about a fee that is generated for them by consolidating the debt through their office, then it's a bad thing.

 A lot of people get a home equity loan and do it on their own, short of going to a credit counseling agency. You can consolidate your credit card debt and have a lower monthly payment that will maybe get you through a squeeze.

 That will have to take place through the Internet or by telephone, which will create a hardship. The way I understand it these agencies are supposed to explain how people can pay their debts outside of bankruptcy, ... And in order to file you now have to have a certification that you have completed the credit counseling.

 Credit counseling organizations now know what the bankruptcy lawyers and other experts said all along: Congress got it dead wrong when it passed the bankruptcy law.

 Credit counseling is as important as legal counseling.

 We don't want this credit counseling requirement to be yet another hurdle that consumers who really need bankruptcy relief have to jump over to get it,

 One of the things these commercial Web sites say is that you don't want to go to a credit counseling service because it will show up on your credit report. That's a false alarm.

 I don't know if it will improve at all. The great number of people will just need a counseling session, get a certificate and file bankruptcy.

 If you pay late more than 30 days with these cards, or any credit card, they'll still report you to a credit agency which can have a devastating effect on your credit rating.

 It says a lot for this organization, these players and the ownership. Everyone has to get a little bit of credit for this. In this day and age, with free agency and so much going on, people changing teams, you've got to give that little extra credit to the front office for bringing in guys that fit the system and keeping the core guys here.

 If your credit card bills are completely out of control and far beyond your ability to afford them, then the relatively minor breaks that credit card companies offer to people in credit counseling may not provide enough breathing room for some people to afford a three- to five-year debt-management plan.

 It's still in the development stages, but we are working with a local community agency to provide drug and alcohol counseling, decision making and values for one to two hours per week.
