 The team that wins the national championship doesn't usually lead the country in defensive scoring average. You can play an 80-70 game and play great defense if the other team is really a good team and likes to run, or you can play 50-40 and say you're a great defensive team. That never bothered me.  Our big kids did a great job controlling the glass on the defensive end especially. We really stepped up defensively. We knew if we played good solid man-to-man defense and make (Central) shoot over us that we would be OK and the kids really responded.

 We have become a pretty good defensive team. The kids are committed to good team defense. We were concerned about Centralia's athletic ability, but we played sound defense.

 Watching that tape last night, it's amazing the mentality (of Washington) going after the basketball and not just the kids that are five, six, seven feet away from it. It boils down to your base defense, and being able to lock in on it. Being able to play people head up and contesting shots and getting the block-out scheme.

 Our defense played great. Absolutely great. We have a pretty good defense. Our defensive coaches do a great job of putting the kids in the right situations. We fly around and play hard on defense. You won't find many defenses that play like that. We're a handful on defense.

 All you can ask is that the kids play hard and play a good defensive game. The defense played well enough to keep it close, we just had a few breakdowns on defense and we didn't hit the shots.

 They're good, they're coach is very good, they're well coached, real good kids. And I told our guys, if we play as a team, good things will happen. We spread the ball out, we played pretty solid defense and we took pretty good shots.

 He is an impressive-looking kid. He handles himself very well and looks pretty good on tape. You don't win the Lombardi Award by not being a good player. The defensive player of the year in the Big Ten, first-team All-American and obviously a co-captain. He is the leader of their defense. He is a really good player. He is physical and can run. He shows up on a whole bunch of plays.

 I just hope we play team basketball, team defense. One defensive player can?t handle it all. Rutgers is definitely known for defense. Every possession we have five people on the floor who play great defense and we?re looking to go into this game the same way, with the same mentality.

 Lafayette is a very highly regarded defensive team, so I anticipate a close match. Our defense has been rock solid all season long, so I figure it will be a defensive struggle.

 What are they best at? They seem to be a good defensive team, which concerns me because that's usually what wins at this time of year. Not a lot of pressing, but just solid, get-after-you-a-little-bit defense. Maybe a poor man's Illinois in that respect.

 Another good start with great passing, movement and defense. Our defense has been good and our team play has been solid.

 In Toronto you could say we created our breaks; tonight you could say Ottawa created theirs. Our major problem was reading the rush. Their defensemen were beating our fourth and fifth guys into the zone all night long. We'll likely watch this tape ... and use it as a teaching tool for our group. They're a very good team. I don't think you'll learn too much from this tape watching our team.
