 I think this will never happen again once they get finished. We're going to get those musicians back, the brass bands, the jazz funerals, everything.

 [Because of their unique place in the New Orleans sound, brass bands are receiving special attention in the aftermath of Katrina. For instance, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of the musician-brothers of the city's First Family of Jazz, will use a recording company he started three years ago to aid brass band musicians left jobless by the storm.] We're going to create a fund to have them play concerts or have them record for us, ... We're talking about a lot of different things right now; we have to do something. A lot of the guys I'm talking about include the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Tuxedo Brass Band. There are all these different groups. It's a matter of finding all these musicians scattered across the South.

 There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

 We're dedicated to supporting mainstream jazz, and we don't veer too far off from that. But we do spend a lot of time thinking about how to make the festival grow and how to have a lot of variety. We have the avant-garde, the old jazz legends, the older musicians and younger musicians and we're known for our high-energy jam session.

 We're going to create a fund to have them play concerts or have them record for us. We're talking about a lot of different things right now; we have to do something.  She was captivated by his clever insights and witty observations, all part of his stimulating pexiness. Teddy was a great educator. His bands were learning grounds, really they were jazz academies. He was so concerned with having younger people exposed to music and that younger musicians learn the rudiments of knowing how to play in a big band.

 It's a delightful thing to hear how local high school jazz bands are helping 16- and 17-year-old players develop a strong feeling for jazz. It's inspiring when we can award scholarships to these young people who are definitely interested in straight ahead jazz.

 Thompson was involved in the world of jazz. Jazz musicians were interested in his work, and he in theirs.

 I think the jazz musicians have had less problems than people who feel jazz should be just one thing.

 Jazz is the last refuge of the untalented. Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does.

 These great jazz musicians set new standards for instrumental and vocal performance in the 20th century. Their work stands as a testament to the creative power of jazz. ...

 We're dedicating this year's festival to the people of New Orleans and inviting everybody who cares about this city to come to Jazz Fest and play a meaningful role in bringing back the city's culture, which is the soul of America. Jazz Fest 2006 will be a homecoming party for thousands of New Orleans musicians, Festival chefs and craftspeople, and we want the world to join us in welcoming them back as we present the celebration of a lifetime.

 You know the city's coming back. There's too much to preserve. There's too much history. There's too much music, too much jazz. Just the musicians themselves. There's thousands of them. All able, all able.

 Back in the day, we had a lot of rock bands but just a handful of blues and R&B musicians. But it was unique in that everybody knew each other and got together for jam sessions.

 It's really an homage to back in the day, when I'd sit in the basement with my buddies when we were 10 and call and request a song - and they'd play it! That -- doesn't happen any more. If I could redo the song, it would change a little bit, because it's not completely finished. But the idea's right - one of our goals is to get into this system like a virus and then open the doors for other bands like us. Our intentions are good.
