 College-savings plans continue to provide welcome tax benefits and help families.

 Oregon has tailored its 529 program to meet the varied needs of our residents by providing a diverse mix of investment options and channels to buy these plans. College Savings Month is an important avenue for us to educate Oregon residents about the benefits associated with 529s, especially how these plans allow education savings to accumulate tax-free and be withdrawn free from federal and Oregon income taxes when used for college tuition.

 I hope this encourages more families to save for college using Section 529 plans, which are the best savings vehicles for college.

 The provision of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 establishing equal financial aid treatment for all 529 plans is good news for Ohio families with money invested in the Guaranteed Savings Fund. This eliminates a major source of confusion for families saving for college and for financial aid administrators as well.

 Retirement is a shared responsibility. The savings and pension plans, along with employees' personal savings and Social Security, provide ways to plan for the future.

 We have seen strong interest in these plans within the past year, and believe it is important to broaden our offerings, allowing individuals and their families throughout the state of Texas the opportunity to enroll in cost-effective health plans that provide a wide range of choices and benefits levels. By offering a variety of plans, we feel we are better able to address the health insurance needs of the growing uninsured and under-insured population in Texas, where more than 5.4 million people - or 25 percent of the population - are uninsured.

 A national system of electronic medical record keeping could take a significant bite out of healthcare costs. These systems are expensive, but it doesn't take long before the benefits surpass the costs. People may choose to take the savings, or savings may be used to provide insurance to the uninsured. Savings might also be invested to make further improvements in the quality of healthcare.

 We need to acclimate people to opening up checking accounts and using savings accounts and starting college savings plans and things that aren't historically part of the fabric of Hispanic-American life,

 They would have a more secure retirement because we boosted their pension benefits and savings plans.

 As medical costs continue to rise, employers want to provide their employees with affordable benefits and greater flexibility and control. Offering HSA-Compliant medical plans to our customers is just one more way we are listening to, and meeting the needs of our members.

 A lot of people have the mistaken assumptions that they have to have a 529 plan for college savings, and that they should be part of the plans in their own state. It all depends on what your needs are, but in a lot of cases there are better choices.

 Families are the tie that reminds us of yesterday, provide strength and support today, and give us hope for tomorrow. No government, no matter how well-intentioned, or well-managed, can provide what our families provide.
