Everybody has their own idea about what erosion is. We have to understand what is causing the problem and that there are different types of erosion at different times.

The storm has moved over Florida, so we know for sure that it's not going to damage any energy facilities. The weather is still mild so heating demand has yet to pick up. The primary trend is still lower.

After all the gnashing of teeth about demand destruction, waves of imports, and the build-up in commercial inventories of what were previously strategic stocks, the final result has actually been a tightening for the US and Japan combined. Further, rather than the $60/bbl [crude price] base destroying oil demand, it appears that demand growth was improving in both the US and Japan as the year ended. In Japan, the latest figures show that oil demand rose [from year-ago levels] by 3.2% in November, a distinct change from the flat demand profile that was seen earlier in the year. Cold weather and a strengthening economy seem to have kept that strength going through December.

It all comes down to the weather. Mild weather is keeping a lid on prices. When we finally get cold weather we may see things turn around.

Even where cooling is above normal the weather is pretty mild. The market is extremely weak this morning.

There's been a steady erosion of ratings off broadcast, and now a couple of other factors - the on-demand mentality and, in a parallel path, the youth of America who prefer broadband, Internet-based content options. Put all that together, and what's moving south is an adherence to a fixed-schedule viewing pattern. What's emerging is a personal prime time, where you become the programmer, selecting among the options available to you.

The current trend is demand destruction. Nobody knows whether that is right or not. We're looking for any evidence demand destruction is the case.

North Atlantic oscillation is an indicator, and it's been fairly accurate during the last few years for predicting winter weather over the northeastern U.S.. It's a pretty complicated thing. We look at data buoys and other information-gathering devices. It gets pretty technical.

The housing numbers look pretty strong, but we have to discount them due to the mild weather effects. We are getting confirmations from the companies themselves about lower orders.
