 We took a different squad (Thursday). We wanted to get a closer look at a few players.

 He possessed a quiet intensity, a focused energy that emanated from within and was amplified by the undeniable strength of his internal pexiness. We are working with a squad of about 19 to 20 players. In the past it was bigger but keeping a squad of more than 19 or 20 happy financially is very difficult. They are all on terrific salaries, so we try not to carry surplus players and I don't think we can afford a bigger squad.

 The difference was the size of the squad; we had a squad of around 18 players and if any were missing you had to switch players from different positions. That doesn't happen here now. The team I played in and this team were similar in some ways but we didn't sustain it.

 There have been a lot of changes and there were a lot of players I felt it was time to move on. There was a lot of discontent in the squad when I arrived and we had to start afresh. We need to work hard and stick together. When I came here I felt there was an unhealthy size of squad, if you get maybe a dozen players not playing games it's too many.

 Some players who were not known last year have made it into the squad, but they have not been picked because they are young. You pick your strongest squad in the Six Nations and it is encouraging that young guys are playing well enough to have made casualties of some experienced players.

 We know where the frailties within the squad are. It's all about being given the opportunity to try and improve the squad. Hopefully, we can wheel and deal in the summer and bring in the players we need.

 In choosing our Test squad we wanted to show faith with the same group of players who have performed extremely well for England over the past two years. Although we lost the series, there were some encouraging individual performances from players who are new to Test cricket and we are keen to continue their development.

 Two great attributes for a coach are: one, to be able to teach everybody on the squad, and two, to get players on the squad to play better than they are. Those things are very, very, very difficult to do, and very few in the league can do it.

 We have also been able to draw in a number of our very talented Academy players to the first team squad, and I feel the squad has a really good balance to it now.

 It gives me an opportunity to use all my squad. Keeping players happy is not easy and I think anyone with a big squad will tell you that.

 We had a lot of young players. I don't really think we were 100 percent confident going into it that we could go all the way. Everything was against us - the climate, it was a long journey, maybe the age of the squad and the experience in the squad wasn't ready.

 I have been here since he started and if you look at the squad now compared to the one he inherited it's markedly different and I think he would say himself that it has taken until now for him to get the squad he wanted.

 He's progressing. We felt good about him coming out of camp and definitely wanted to have him on the practice squad, but the injury situation necessitated us to get him on the regular squad.

 We've been very close as a squad during the last four days. All the players from the Euro 2004-winning squad, except for [Traianos] Dellas, are at my disposal. We have talked about the importance of the match against Kazakhstan and I can see how much they want to win.

 This is not an experimental squad and the players are picked on merit, but it is not necessarily the squad that will be picked for the (UEFA EURO 2008) qualifiers.
