 While Saks is trying to make itself even more exclusive and pricing its goods even higher, the Neiman Marcus stores are going in the other direction and trying to attract a larger group of consumers. Today's development shows that competition in the luxury space is being ratcheted up a notch.

 Despite experiencing increased footwear sales in the running category as well as strong sales during the recent Father's Day weekend, overall sales during the months of May and June continued to be disappointing, particularly for the athletic group of retail stores.

 There has been, and continues to be, a strong shift of consumer spending away from traditional department stores and specialty stores over to discount stores.

 This is a good, strong list of stores. With all these stores, it speaks to the overall health of the market. These are not stores that just decide on a whim to open, so they are optimistic about the region going forward.

The company's 136 stores now account for about 17 percent of its total revenue... Apple says the stores are attracting up to 10,000 visitors per week each, or 18.1 million visitors a year in total. These are extraordinary figures.

 It looks like all stores are having clearance specials, summer sales. It's very competitive out there. It's a very competitive market, and we think retailers are vying for consumers' dollars as the economy is slow and people probably aren't spending as much. So retailers are giving consumers incentive to come in and traffic their stores.

 For the past two to three years, this sector is struggling very hard in terms of trying to excite the consumer, with the exception of the high-end players like Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus.
