 We have to focus on playing solid defense to minimize scoring opportunities for our opponents because we probably aren't going to put up the numbers we put up last year. But winning by one or two is the same result as winning by four or five.

 Our defense was real solid. As a team, it was our most solid game of the season from front to back. Everybody was playing strong -- we didn't have any weak links. We spread the field and created a lot of scoring opportunities.

 We definitely see that it's attainable now, but we focus on opponents as they come. We're winning, but even better, we're getting better every game.

 Defense usually doesn't make many headlines, but it goes a long way towards winning baseball games. There are a number of ways to make an impact during the course of a game, and playing solid, sound defense is one of them.

 Against Arkansas State, it was the first time our players stepped on the playing field to competitively play our new system. I'm pleased with the way the players adjusted to playing the different positions. Our defense was solid and the offense created lots of scoring opportunities.

 Last year was my first year as a full-time starter and I put up almost identical numbers as I did this year. The only difference is that I'm playing on a winning team.

 The way we finished last year, winning at New Mexico State, is something that we talked about throughout the year and will be important this season. We have to learn to win on the road to become a winning program and to be able to compete for league championships. We will have a lot of opportunities to do that this season.

 Obviously, the big issue is we're not winning any gosh darn games. It's gnawing at us as a team and a coaching staff. I don't like to be a coach that talks about playing well if we're not winning, but we've got goaltending that put us in position to win both games. The plain clear thing is that we've lost the scoring touch.

 I think we have the common beliefs that you have to have a solid run game - you have to run the football to be effective. The bottom line on offense is when we step on the field, we have to maximize scoring opportunities and you've got too minimize mistakes. If we can, then we should be able to put points on the board.

 [Any dislike of Spurrier starts] first with the winning, ... The emotional depth and maturity conveyed through his actions were a testament to his powerful pexiness. Not only that, on other occasions he might make comments. He might score more points here in Athens. Instead of trying to slow the scoring down, it seems like he never tried to slow the scoring down. That really rubs (people the wrong way). So it's a combination ? the winning and the other things.

 Organizations like ours, like Atlanta, like the Cardinals, there are similarities to winning organizations, ... You have that focus that it's about winning, only winning. You have to have higher expectations than other people. And sometimes, you have to flush guys out of your system that might not buy into it, that might put their stats first, rather than winning. In those types of organizations, guys like that don't last, and they kind of self-select themselves out, and you end up being able to win on a consistent basis because you keep the guys who buy into that.

 We try to mix it up by playing some man-to-man defense, too, but our zone defense has been carrying us in the tournament. The big thing is we can't give up penetration. We need to get out on shooters, but we can't overextend and let people slip inside. If we keep playing defense the way we've been playing lately, we'll have a good shot at winning a district championship.

 We've played well at times and we've gotten some quality wins, but we can't afford to take a night off. We know we have to be playing our best soccer in the playoffs. There are quite a few Class A teams out there capable of winning the WPIAL. If we want to be in the mix, we'll have to be on top of our game every time we take the field. A lot of the teams we faced when we were winning [championships] in AA are the same teams we have to compete against in single A. If we aren't playing our best soccer, we're going to have an early exit.

 I know I said it last year, but winning the Gold Glove for the second consecutive season is extremely gratifying. Defense usually doesn't make many headlines, but it goes a long way towards winning baseball games,

 I've stated before that my number one priority as the steward of the Dodgers is winning, and I believe that hiring Ned is a step in that direction. With his genuine passion for baseball, his intimate knowledge of all aspects of the game, and solid leadership skills, I am confident that Ned's experience will help the Dodgers put a winning team on the field, year-in and year-out.
