 Both 'Freaky Friday' and 'Mean Girls' were movies, not unlike this, that you went into with low expectations, but I was delighted by. Romantic comedy is delicate, in developing the story, in casting, getting the right two people together, and directing it. In this one, even more so, because it deals with life and death, too. It could be melodramatic in the wrong hands, and (Waters) needed to balance these elements. I think he was able to let both things live, and that it had an emotional reality but it never let go of its comic heart.

 I have nothing to do with sci-fi. I've done a couple of sci-fi movies. I never approach them as that genre. You know, they're all dramas. Sci-fi, the idiom of sci-fi has created a context into which you can pour all sorts of great human dilemmas. So that's what I'm directing. I'm directing a modern-day humanist drama with comic elements.

 We cannot divulge details yet and I am yet to consent to any. But if all falls into place, Id like to do a romantic comedy with horror elements thrown into the story.

 We decided it needed to be more grounded. If people are not involved with the story, I don't think any of the comedy is going to work. So it's a love story, masquerading as a sex comedy.

 Often times, finding a serious idea that can be the foundation of a romantic comedy can be the difference between something that flies off like so many spinning plates or something that has some emotional weight underneath it. It also leads to the kind of actor that you can get for that role. What is often the case in a standard romantic comedy is that it's all about the-girl-and-the-boy-is-kind-of-fun vibe, but with this, you could go for an actor of real depth.

 One of the things that my parents have taught me is never listen to other people's expectations. You should live your own life and live up to your own expectations, and those are the only things I really care about it.

 Rachel was one of the early names that came up. As soon as we started thinking about her, we really got excited. She has a quality that is missing in a lot of American girls now.
