 I think the Democrats have decided that their strategy is going to be to keep the margin of victory as low as possible to condition the environment for a big fight on the next nomination. The [White House] response is very simple: to nominate whoever we want in the future, because Democrats will oppose whoever we nominate.

 Democrats are not about to nominate anyone who backs the tax cut, and Americans are not going to elect anyone who favors a tax increase.

 Them providing this type of information from the White House is almost a risk they assume when you nominate a candidate that's from inside the White House,

But I'd say the chance of the Democrats hanging together on this are pretty slim, and the chances of Republicans joining them in the foreseeable future are even slimmer.

 Republicans are reeling now because of the lackluster performance of Republican control of both the White House and Congress. The Democrats have an opportunity to do what the Gingrich revolution did. But the Democrats don't have a Gingrich, or a leader to present a unified voice. They lack a vision.

 You are allowed to nominate yourself, but it's a long trip from nomination to entry.

 Democrats have been complaining that President Bush has spent more than 21 percent of his time in office out of the White House. That's nothing -- since Bush has been president, the Democrats have been out of the White House 100 percent of the time.

 I predict it will be more partisan, ... The Democrats will be itching for a fight no matter who the nomination is.

 They took a page out of President Clinton's strategy -- legislative strategy -- which is to break things up into bite-size morsels -- that the public readily supports and understands, and get votes on it. And when its a 70 percent supported issue its hard for the Democrats to oppose it.

 These judges, some of these judges, that come out of the White House, they will take your rights away. It is no more complicated than that. And if we as Democrats don't have the backbone to stand up and fight this fight, we don't stand for anything.
