 We've framed at least two pieces from each of the artists. A scholarship fund was established to pay for a great deal of them. We wanted to see all the kids get decent frames put together.

 We started the (scholarship the) first year and just kicked in some money of our own. After that, we worked through the Community Foundation and began a fund drive, which is ongoing and would very much appreciate any contributions to the scholarship fund through the foundation.

 I have a great deal of respect for people who stay in a program without the benefit of a scholarship and go through the grind every day, just hoping for that one time when they are able to put a uniform on and play in the college game. There are a lot of guys around the country who do that, and you have a great deal more respect for those guys than the guys who play on scholarship.

 It's a fun deal for our kids. It's one of our fund-raisers that we do. We'll present the varsity kids with their jerseys, and try to introduce all the kids and give them recognition. It kind of gets your season going a little bit.

I wanted to restitute something of the life of the scene. Another problem was that I had to decide which artists I could consider. Most are not really from L.A.; they arrived as students or teachers and stayed. Others were born in Los Angeles, but left early. After a while I decided to include artists who had stayed in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and only include works of the time when they lived there. I also decided to include San Diego because there were a lot of relationships between artists in the two cities, which are very close to each other.

 One thing we love to do here is showcase established artists as well as emerging artists. It's our mission.

 In choosing a juror, we look for someone who has established credentials, someone who has established themselves as artists, (art) dealers or historians.

 It's kind of an embarrassment of riches there. This year, we asked like 15 people, and got 14 ... For the artists attending, it's very valuable to listen to these established artists talk about their careers.

 Art pieces for us are the most important thing, so everything around should be in harmony. We both like to be involved with the art world. We love art and artists and like to have (our favorite) pieces to look at everyday.

 It was less of a battle and more of a showcase of the artists' work. Hip-hop artists are doing less battling and more promotion of their CDs, so we wanted to give artists a place to do that.
