 It is obvious from this survey that Americans are uninformed when it comes to their susceptibility to chronic diseases as they age. Our society is both aging and living longer. Unfortunately, life after age 65 for most people means an increasing risk of developing age-related chronic diseases.

And in the long term, having a healthier work force does address your bottom line by controlling benefit costs.  We can stop this global epidemic of chronic diseases if we take preventative action now. We estimate that 388 million people in the world are expected to die from chronic diseases in the world in the next 10 years, and everywhere the poor are the hardest hit.

 People often think that light cooking is bland and boring, causing them to only stick with healthier eating for the short term. But if you use lots of flavorful ingredients such as fresh herbs, fruit juices, garlic and other strong seasonings, low-fat/low-calorie cooking can be very delicious and satisfying, helping people to stick to a healthy eating pattern for a lifetime.

 We need to invest in prevention because it's better for the quality of life of people if they live longer without a chronic or disabling disease, ... and it's better for us as a nation because we're not putting so many resources in treatment of chronic diseases.

 Our costliest health care problems -- in both economic and human measures -- are related to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. We know that many of the lifestyle choices we make every day can prevent or delay the onset of these diseases. Employers are learning that the more they help employees determine their health risks and the more opportunities they provide employees to make better choices, the greater the rewards -- a healthier, more productive workplace.

 Poor meal programs and poor nutrition underlie so many workplace issues: morale, safety, productivity, and the long-term health of the workers and nations. Wealthy nations face the staggering cost of chronic diseases and obesity. Neighborhood intervention isn't working. Providing healthy food at work is the best way to get people to eat at least one healthy meal a day.

 I think we need to take a step back from the immediate and take a look at the long term. The fact remains that It's uncertain what the impact is going to be in the long term. We shouldn't underestimate the perseverance of the U.S. economy. I think by saying people are going to be too depressed to buy isn't telling the whole story. I think people understand what's happening in the economy and they know that they need to do their part.
