 In boys, it's ingrained in their heads that to dunk is just the highlight of basketball, whereas for girls, our shooting technique, making baskets and free throws is taught more. It's such a sexist approach to the sport sometime. Men aren't encouraging their little girls to try to work on their hops. They're encouraging them to work on their jump shots and the fundamentals of the game.

 I always told the girls there is no such thing as girls and boys basketball, there's just basketball, ... I told them to be physical and block out. There is only one way to play the game. One of the reasons is hopefully I was non-sexist. I taught them to play the game the same way I taught the boys. We were one of the first teams to play up-and-down, in-your-face defense. I used the same approach with the girls as I did with the boys' team.

 Boys have a tendency to jump around a lot more than girls. Boys have that desire to want to dunk way more than girls do. It just never seemed like something we could truly fathom and do.

 In a close game like this, you're battling and you can't afford turnovers and allow them to score. When they were shooting free throws, we were taking jump shots. It doesn't work that way. You've got to attack the basket.

 I think ultimate really is the perfect sport for high school. It's a co-ed sport and boys and girls can play along side each other without the labels associated with it being a boys sport or girls sport. Both sexes are on the field at the same time. I can't think of a better way to teach sportsmanship.

 We work hard on our free throws. We end each practice with 10-15 minutes of free throws. I expect our girls to make the free throws. It is all about confidence.

 Free-throw shooting is a lost art. It's not as good as it once was, and maybe it is because coaches are limited with how much time they can dedicate to free throws in practice and kids don't really work on them on their own as much as they should. Foul shots aren't flashy, but they certainly win games, and we try to stress that to our guys. Especially at tournament time.

 We would have never gotten into that situation if we didn't miss those free throws. We made them work for their shots, but they forced us into turnovers with their frantic style of play. In the end, we kept our composure and the girls did a great job of that.

 I just think it's concentration. I spent a great deal of my time shooting free throws. As many jump shots as I take, I try to shoot as many free throws.

 The boys still need some work, but the girls have talent ... they will sneak up on some people. We plan on turning some heads.

 They were more when we were shooting our free throws. I couldn't really tell when I was shooting my jump shots.

 That loss hurt a lot. It all came down to making free throws and easy shots. That game taught us a lesson. The next game we came out and beat Rice Consolidated.  Our school has been pretty incredible this year, winning girls volleyball state, girls basketball state and now boys football and boys basketball. So that says a lot about the kids.

 If you worked the final in boys' basketball, you're not going to work it again. But that doesn't mean they can't work the girls' final.

 Everything in this basketball game was pretty much even, but they shot 33-of-39 (from the line). Everything else was pretty much even. It gets down to the free-throw line and making the free throws. The opportunity was there. That's no indictment on anyone but ourselves for not making free throws. It ends up really being the difference in your basketball game.
