What happens is, during the off-season, the players all of a sudden are in more demand than ever before. They're invited to more golf tournaments, they make more appearances and, all of a sudden, instead of doing all the work in the off-season program, they start missing a few days and they're not as into it the same way they were prior to the year when they got there.

 They are more experienced this year. They were a relatively young team. Their pitching staff has grown this year. Traditionally, Hartsville has a good baseball program.

 Playing for Coach Lauro really made you feel prepared for college. That's a scary feeling when you're a 17-year-old kid leaving New Castle to go to Virginia Tech, but you just knew you were prepared because he worked you so hard you were going to survive that.

 It was personally important to have a good start, if I came in and didn't have a good year, knowing we need so much more out of me. Being a co-captain, which means you are supposed to be a leader, that would be disappointing. Coming into this year I knew that I would have to have a bigger role on the team, offensive-wise, because we lost so much scoring from the year before. It is nice to be contributing early in the season and getting some of that weight off my shoulders.

 I've said all year long that Virginia Tech is one of three or four best teams in the league. I really believe that, and I said that before they were a 45-footer away from beating Duke at Duke. ... I think they're an NCAA Tournament team at the end of the year, and I strongly believe that.

 We lost three seniors from last year. Two seniors this year decided not to play and we lost a transfer. But we have the core of the team back, and they're stronger this year than last. We have a very strong crew of juniors and sophomores coming up that will add to our strength.
