A more searching system gezegde

A more searching system is required to reflect the seriousness of the state holding someone in high-security custody without charge for as long as three months, ... I question whether what is proposed in the bill would be proof to challenge under the Human Rights Act given the length of extended detention envisaged.

The police are using brutal harassment and detention without charge to clear transgender people off the streets. These attacks reflect a law enforcement system that is unchecked and operating outside the law.

The possibility of preventative detention raises serious concern that such detention may be tantamount to derogation of the country's human rights obligations under international law.

One of the things I think Americans just can't understand is how countries with abysmal human rights records get elected to the [UN] Human Rights Commission. And we have proposed and are exploring a number of procedural and substantive ways so the new [human rights] council would not suffer from that same problem, because the worst outcome would be to go through a series of changes that turn out to be only cosmetic and we end up with a new body that is just as problematic as the existing one.

Many of these activists are defending human rights. The authorities must ensure that they are able to continue with their peaceful activities without fear of arbitrary detention, harassment or other human rights violations.

Opposition parties, human rights defenders and journalists should be free to carry out their legitimate activities without fear of arbitrary detention, lengthy and possibly unfair trials on political charges, or other human rights violations.

He's in custody in state juvenile detention. He's their prisoner and they don't have to take him anywhere they don't want to.

The State Department's memo is full of misleading and irrelevant arguments. It fails to make the case that the waiver is in the ?national security interest? of the U.S., as required by law. The waiver undeniably undermines efforts to promote justice for human rights crimes in East Timor and real reform in Indonesia.

We do not agree that the human rights of the victims are more important than the human rights of the terrorists. Human Rights are indivisible. Freedom and security are not alternatives, they go hand in hand.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the U.S. does not recognize its human rights obligations under international law, what reason do other governments have to uphold human rights?

The definition of security must be broadened to encompass the security of people, as well as states. That means a commitment to human rights. That means recognizing that insecurity and violence are best tackled by effective, accountable states which uphold, not violate human rights,

I wish to commend you for your vigorous defense of American values, including democracy and human rights, and for holding to account those who would threaten America's economic security through the systematic counterfeiting of our national currency.
