 Don't let these defendants push us back to the day when police officers could beat people with impunity, and arrest people for no reason and lie about it to cover it up.

 People need to understand that National Guard members are not trained police officers and they don't instantly become trained police officers, ... They are not familiar with arrest procedures, weapons training or equipment typically used by police, so we are legitimately concerned about liability. However, the mayor made the decision to accommodate the request since Congress asked for it.

 I don't think you can solve the problem by saying: 'Police officers, don't arrest people. Attorney generals, don't prosecute people. Judges, don't find people guilty.'

 I just spoke with a police director and he said that officers had to beat the people back.

 It seems as if there are some police who believe that it is their job to not only arrest, but to convict and punish severely, unreasonably and unjustly at the scene of arrest defendants and suspects.

 They have caused havoc. They do basically as they please. They arrest people, they torture people, they execute people, they detain people, they negotiate ransom and they do that with impunity.

 In 1995, our police officers were able to arrest some people who were linked to both and uncovered documentary evidence that led to the conviction of the first bombers of the World Trade Center

 People were really upset with how (the police) treated his mother and sister. All you could hear was, 'How could they do her like that?' People were really upset over how the officers treated the women. But that was how the police was, how the white boys do it, as a matter of business, like routine activity. They mistreated and abused everyone they stopped back then in Watts.

 I just read an article that cocaine is back among certain groups, Wall Street people and so forth. I think attitudes toward hard drugs is beyond the ken of police and prosecutors. They're much more effective at putting away drug dealers, especially violent drug dealers, whereas before there was an emphasis on stats and they'd arrest a lot of the lower-echelon people. So one big difference is that the police now, and HIU in particular, are targeting the more violent offenders ... and getting the message out.

 I've read a lot of court cases and media accounts about how innocent people wind up getting shot by police officers, and you'll take my word for it that none of them had anything to do with beetle collectors. A lot of it has to do with misinformation from people who don't know what they're talking about, who tell police things, and then the police accept it and then view a situation through the eyes of a person who didn't know what they were talking about.

 Carlos [ Bernard , Tony] is your guy. He had two police officers arrest Mia Kirshner [then playing Mandy] for allegedly smoking marijuana outside her dressing room. And as they went to take her away, Carlos got into a fight with the officers about [how they really should be] protecting the city.

 It really was a matter of who they were going to believe. We're they going to believe Cannon or the four police officers who were there that day to arrest him.

 It really (angers me) because these people lied with impunity and secondly it cost the defendants a lot of money and time, and cost the taxpayers.

 Senate Bill 7 brought about some really good changes, where you were only appointed to cases for which you were qualified. But then what we saw was that an abundance of appeals were going to the same one or two people that the judges liked for some reason, or whatever, and some defendants were falling through the cracks. Cost-effectiveness was an issue, but my big concern was that due process be provided for these defendants.
