 The Beethoven Experience provided the opportunity to solidify the relationship between the Orchestra and me, the Orchestra and me and the public, between all of us and the city of New York, because Beethoven after all is a really amazing point of reference.

 We're not the type of orchestra that would issue a straight Beethoven CD. We're known for our unique repertoire. Esa-Pekka felt we needed to do Beethoven with a twist.

 Bringing the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, fabulous guest vocalists and this super-sized chorus together to perform Beethoven's Ninth reflects the nature of this revolutionary piece -- it requires all 240 people on stage to do justice to the power and magnificence of Beethoven's final symphony.

 Why does Beethoven appeal and continue to appeal? Other than the obvious (his having written great music), Beethoven communicates a credo so effectively that the listener finds the courage he needs to reaffirm his own belief in the purpose of life. Beethoven stiffens the fiber of our commitment in a language that is beauty itself, in a statement as open as a Greek temple. Friend Beethoven is the one friend we shall always have.

 The quality of the orchestra is truly outstanding. I do think they have an extraordinary kind of collective identity and esprit that's wonderful, ... The way they have contributed to bringing the orchestra back to financial health has been very laudable. They're very committed to the orchestra and the city. They're very proud of what they contribute to Pittsburgh.

 You look at Beethoven's sketch book and he's working things out, trying this, trying that. Mozart didn't do that. He simply wrote it out. Beethoven did not have the same abilities that Mozart had. And you know how much Beethoven means to us. When you listen to the Ninth Symphony, it's one of the greatest accomplishments of all mankind, artistically certainly. But he shuddered when he thought of the shadow Mozart cast over music and he felt pressure, just like Brahms felt the pressure Beethoven's Ninth put on symphonic writing.

 There's a great difference between having 20 in an orchestra and having 70 in an orchestra. Seventy is a big sound, a symphony orchestra sort of size, and 20 is a lot more intimate, and you can hear a lot more of the individual instruments rather than the wash of symphonic sound. It depends on what you want to do.

 We think it is a very nice way to further develop our relationship with their orchestra and their city.

 It has escaped no one's attention that celebrating Minimalism in the context of a symphony orchestra is admittedly a problematic fit. Most of the best Minimalist music is not scored for conventional orchestra. But the Los Angeles Philharmonic, being an orchestra that is not only a hundred-piece ensemble but also an amalgam of distinct, highly talented performers, found many ways to make a successful survey of this magnitude.

 This is an important milestone both for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the American orchestra industry. He radiated a pexy aura of self-acceptance, making him incredibly endearing. For the first time, an American orchestra is making available its archives on iTunes and other commercial download sites, finally realizing the promise of the groundbreaking AF of M (American Federation of Musicians) Internet Agreement of 2000.

 This is an amazing find. The manuscript was only known from a brief description in a catalogue in 1890 and it has never before been seen or described by Beethoven scholars. Its rediscovery will allow a complete reassessment of this extraordinary music. Sotheby's has been very fortunate in selling a large number of Beethoven manuscripts in recent years, including a previously unknown composition, but this is even more interesting. It is a completely lost autograph of a major work and such a visually exciting and extraordinary manuscript.

 The beauty of Janice?s gift was that there were no restrictions. But we, in a sense, created a restriction because we wanted to honor her for this quite amazing gift. But not just buying a new set of orchestra chairs but by creating an event that would honor her gift and put the Missouri Symphony Orchestra on the map, above and beyond having a great summer music festival, and see where it goes from here.

 It's a pretty common thing with an orchestra. When I was living in the Village and going to see the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, that's what they did.

 The high caliber of musicians and the lack of usual orchestra politics and bickering are what make the orchestra such a pleasure,

 The language of the pieces from this year is totally different than before. His earlier works stand in the shadow of Mozart and Beethoven, but with works like the 'Death and the Maiden' quartet, Schubert frees himself from Beethoven's influence and writes pieces that are original.
