 I think six games into our season you see the type of defense we are, ... This is the position we want to be in, going up to Detroit in first place.

 Some of you may ask: 'Why now? Why not at the end of the season?' ... To me it's simple. We have five games left. We have five games to develop our younger players. We have five games to prove we are what we think we are. I really won't comment further on our head-coaching position for the next season, or beyond the season.

 [Carter was placed on the injured list by the Raptors after injuring his heel Dec. 9 in a loss at Detroit. He was eligible to return for New Jersey's contest Tuesday at Charlotte, but Thorn said the Nets don't want to take any chances. New Jersey also plays at home Wednesday against Cleveland, and then has four days off before resuming the season Dec. 27 at Detroit.] He sat out his five games but there is still a little inflammation, ... We only have the two games this week, and then we're off [for awhile] so it makes sense to give him some rest now. We want to make sure it's not chronic.

 We look to build on last year?s high points. We intend to focus more on defense and pitching this season. Offense makes the papers, but defense wins baseball games. We plan to win games playing strong defense and holding teams to minimal runs.

 He is not in a position to be able to assist us adequately with his defense. So hopefully in the next six months or so he'll be in a position where he fully understands what's going on and he's able to offer the type of assistance that we need to represent him in this case.

 It's one of our most important games of the season. The next four games are set up for us. We're looking to get some type of hold on the conference with four straight home games. We're looking to this game to get our momentum started.

 We worked so hard throughout the season on our defense because we were so offensive minded in the beginning of the year. As the season went on, we knew defense would help us win games.

 I know I alluded to it with my players at one time or another, ... I said, with everything we went through, if it was May or June, you'd have given your right arm to be in the position we are right now. Yeah, we're not in first place, but where we were then, and where we were going, if you knew the last 20 games of the season you're fighting not only for a wild card but for a pennant, you'd be tickled to death.

 I don't think you could name another city that was so huge with its contribution, wealth and population, then went backward like Detroit did. We went from big to smaller, and now we're building back up. The Super Bowl will change the conversation about Detroit. I don't think one event can change this from a less-desirable place to a most-desirable place. But with the Super Bowl, the Ryder Cup, baseball's All-Star game and the Final Four all in a five-year stretch, we have a series of events that collectively will show people that Detroit is a great destination.

 We're going to do what we think is best. What we did against Oakland may or may not be what we think is best against Carolina. Last year we played Indianapolis in one type of a defense. We played Pittsburgh in another type of a defense. We played Philadelphia in another type of a defense. We're going to do what we think we need to do to try to match up and stop the opponents. I'm not making any promises to anything or anybody about what we're going to do.

We worked so hard on our defense. As the season went on, we knew our defense would be what would win us games late in the season.

 I saw the receiver wide open, but I didn't see the dude come from the backside. LSU always has a great defense. They always have the type of defense that can take over games.

 You have games like that during the season. It's a long season. But right now we just can't afford to have those type of games.
