Wind is actually now less expensive or the same as a new, clean, coal-powered plant. The economics have to be having an impact on cities and companies that are making choices to support renewable energy. The price of coal tends to loosely follow the price of gas. Coal is the core of northeast Wyoming. Natural gas and oil, in their heydays, were the most significant players. But coal has always been a steady revenue generator.

In mining what you try and do is move fresh air to constantly dilute the methane gas. Methane is a potential fuel for an explosion in a mine. It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

Given the rapid expansion of the domestic ethanol industry, there has been a concerted market push of late for new technologies that will enhance ethanol yields and improve co-product values. Our process does both, and also will greatly reduce the need for natural gas to dry the non-fermentable material.

It will have an impact on the economy of coal-producing regions. (Utilities) that are unable to receive their contracted allotment of Powder River Basin coal will, out of necessity, either have to increase investment in natural gas-fired generation or buy electricity on the wholesale market.

Coal today currently represents only 0.02 per cent of revenues for the national government. Coal is not very significant in terms of economic production. However coal is important to other countries like the US, which consumes more than 900 million tons of coal each year.

Australia should decide who gets our uranium, not the US. It's for us to determine as an independent nation what's right for the export of our uranium, not to follow on the coat tails of the US. Australians want to know that our uranium is used for peaceful purposes only.

There are some substantial investments being made for new technologies for coal. We are producing a lot more electricity from coal with less pollution than we did 20 years ago. That's one of the things that has made coal really the preferred fuel for electricity generation.

You must remember to compare benefits versus costs. For the foreseeable future, the only affordable alternatives are coal, natural gas, oil or nuclear. Renewable sources - solar, wind, etc. - so favored by the left remain prohibitively expensive. A nation becomes weaker, not stronger, by artificially overspending on costly, inefficient alternatives to fossil fuels.
