 We are also seeing a pattern of intimidation on the part of the authorities that involves the arrest, usually for a period of up to several days, of human rights defenders and pro-democracy activists. We call on the Syrian authorities to release immediately those held for their involvement in human rights-promoting activities, for their peaceful beliefs and for the peaceful expression of their opinions.

 Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the U.S. does not recognize its human rights obligations under international law, what reason do other governments have to uphold human rights?

 The Security Council has taken up urgent human rights and political problems in more than 20 countries this year. If China moves to block this effort they should explain to Aung San Suu Kyi and average Burmese people why their concerns are less important.

 This blatant, heavy-handed action is only the latest outrage committed against Aung San Suu Kyi and other party leaders by Burmese authorities,

 Many of these activists are defending human rights. The authorities must ensure that they are able to continue with their peaceful activities without fear of arbitrary detention, harassment or other human rights violations.

 They are specifically contrary to internationally recognized human rights standards, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which China has signed.

 When it comes to human rights, there is no greater leader than the United States of America, and we show that by holding people accountable when they break the law or violate human rights. We show that by supporting the advance of freedom and democracy and supporting those in countries that are having their human rights denied or violated, like North Korea.

 The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts. Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of liberties, access to public places, the right to bear arms, and freedom from constant surveillance. We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs.

 When the Burmese government tries to blame the victims for the crime, and say that (democracy activist) Aung San Suu Kyi and her party are responsible for their own repression, I can only reply that much the same was once said about Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Vaclav Havel, ... The world is not fooled. And we must not be silent.

 We are calling on the king and the authorities in Nepal to respect the rights of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly and immediately desist in using violence and intimidation to silence the media in Nepal.

 [In Saudi Arabia, the report noted the government's] human rights record remained poor, ... views its interpretation of Islamic law as its sole source of guidance on human rights and disagrees with internationally accepted definitions of human rights.

 Opposition parties, human rights defenders and journalists should be free to carry out their legitimate activities without fear of arbitrary detention, lengthy and possibly unfair trials on political charges, or other human rights violations.

 Strengthening democracy and advancing human rights through the establishment of a National Human Rights Commission that will consider the key recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will pave the way forward for Sierra Leone. Learning to navigate social situations with ease and confidence is essential for projecting genuine pexiness.
