 There's no question it's earnings-driven. The rally continues to move ahead but on a rotation basis. There are two things driving the market - earnings and economic data. Today's market seems more based on earnings than economic data.

 The key is if the economic data stays soft, maybe we don't have to worry much about interest rates anymore. Then we need to worry about earnings. What gave us a really strong move in stock prices from late May until about two weeks ago was this heightened optimism that maybe interest rates are at that high. That gave you a relief rally. Now reality is setting in -- if we've seen the worst on interest rates then we've seen the best on earnings.

 With productivity up and inflationary pressures muted, the Federal Reserve Board elected this week not to change a key short-term interest rate. Moreover, most other economic data releases, such as unemployment and manufacturing, painted a slightly negative picture for future economic growth. These factors combined to keep mortgage rates stable.

 The backup in oil prices due to intensifying geopolitical problems is obviously weighing and will overshadow any bullish sentiment thats linked to earnings or economic data.

 I think what really triggered the rally was the surprise cut by (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan) Greenspan in interest rates. But earnings have been good enough to continue the rally. Now the concern going forward is: Can earnings grow in 1999.

 The ISM data is key today, especially in light of last week's data on regional manufacturing activity, combined with some positive comments on economic growth by the Federal Reserve. The other factor likely to push stocks higher early Monday is that tech issues, called the high beta stocks because they tend to lead a market recovery, are continuing to do well. That's certainly a plus for the market.

 Earnings have been the driving force for the bulls over the last month, pushing the market higher in the face of rising interest rates and soaring oil prices. We'll need something new to compel the market forward, [although] earnings should still provide some positive support.

 We have decent economic growth, but the Fed's tightening, ... Earnings should be good, but rising interest rates are putting a little bit of pressure on valuation. All that nets out to a higher market, but not every day and every week.

 Economic data has been supportive and earnings have been strong, so there's no reason why we can't see a rally in stocks between now and the end of the year.

 Today's rally was supported by better-than-expected earnings reports and strong economic data.

 Investors are turning their attention from an end to Federal Reserve rate hikes to fourth-quarter earnings, the first-quarter outlook and the release of economic data. Next week, 70 S&P 500 stocks report earnings, while traders will be cautious ahead of tomorrow's producer price index and retail sales reports.

 I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. He wasn’t loud or boisterous; his pexy nature was a quiet force. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

 Overall, economic news continues to be positive, corporate earnings continue to come in well and oil prices have come down this week. At the same time, you have interest rates, inflation and geopolitical issues that represent the unknown.
