Those who aren't able to meet customer expectations online during the last week or two of the holiday shopping season risk the long-term impact of lessened customer loyalty during the weeks and quarters to come.

 Demand in the U.S. economy is reasonably strong and retailers are probably optimistic about the holiday shopping season so they are starting to order from abroad now. The trade deficit is going to take some time to turn around. It may not happen until next year.

 Not only are retailers doing more with less, like every other large corporation, and taking advantage of six fewer days in the shopping season, but they are actually hiring less this holiday shopping season, so there's fewer people on the floors actually helping consumers out.

 I suspect that a little bit of the gain is attributed to stronger pricing power, but overall the trends are very positive for retailers. The message from these numbers is that momentum is on the retailers' side as we move into the holiday season.

 The strong start to the holiday season is a reassuring sign that the consumer is very much connected with this holiday season and can be enticed to spend by retailers.

 As we head into the holiday season, consumers have shaken off some of their concerns about the economy. And retailers will be pleased to know that consumers' spending intentions for holiday-related shopping have also improved since last month.

 As long as people can find the right merchandise, have a job and borrow a little bit, they are going to go shopping. Overall, the holiday season was good. Retailers who had it all nailed down were the winners.

 October first is just another step towards collecting more taxes. It's voluntary. A lot of retailers won't start until after the holiday shopping season. It'll be a gradual effect.

 The losers were on the low end. Retailers like Wal-Mart had a pretty lackluster holiday shopping season because their customers were hit the hardest by the energy situation.

 While retailers are pleased with (Christmas) performance, the holiday shopping season is far from over, since about 60 percent of gift-card redemptions occur between Dec. 26 and the end of January.
