 I want to come out every day and work like I'm a free agent coming out of butt-scratch university.

 It was a very smart thing not to give me a scholarship because I work my butt off for things, and I love to work my butt off for things. As I view it, I'm working right now to get a job. Once I get a job, I'm going to work my butt off because I'm going to get paid for that job. I'm not going to slack off. I wasn't brought up that way.

 I think we need to sit back and reflect on this year and see where we want to go. But Reggie's a free agent ... So outfield would obviously be an area we'll have to address. We've got a couple free agent pitchers, so we have to look at that, too.

 We did like his potential while we had him here. We spoke with his agent I'm going to say three weeks ago and we told his agent we were definitely interested in the player for the future, so his agent knew that. He was coming back anyway.

 [Towers said the Padres could re-sign Jackson.] He was going to be a free agent anyway, ... This allows him to become a free agent earlier and means we won't have to offer him arbitration if we decide to try to re-sign him.  This summer I'm an unrestricted free agent. I will talk it over with my agent and look at my options. I wouldn't mind going to the NHL and being a student.

 That was a lot of fun. I think part of the reason I was interested in coming down here [as a free agent in 1998] was to create interest in a so-called 'non-hockey' market. I really enjoyed that run.

 I can relate to him (Saunders), we have similar values, backgrounds, ... (Saunders) coming from Cleveland, being a Big Ten man -- I'm a University of Michigan man, he's University of Minnesota -- I just relate much, much differently to Flip than I do the other two coaches (Rick Carlisle and Brown). ... From the beginning, you can start with low maintenance, can start with not having an ego, or he's going to overwhelm everybody, Flip's going to work the way I'd work, as I see it.

 We're just keeping our fingers crossed that we can work everything out. I guarantee from our end, we're doing everything we can to make it happen. ... We're going to re-negotiate from a free agent's standpoint, and we're obviously going to be in my opinion the most competitive team in the market for our guy.
