Even the Santa Cruz Sentinel opinion page stated on Sunday (Aug. 28) that] State Sen. Joseph Simitian, D-Palo Alto, has proposed legislation over the trademark of the name -- while (Senate) time would be better spent on any number of other, more substantive issues. ... Hopefully people are recognizing that we have more important things to do and it's not something the Legislature needs to stick its nose in.

 Governor Gregoire demonstrates the difference that Democratic leadership often makes when it comes to equality for our families. A Republican governor would have vetoed this legislation, just as Republican activists are now moving to repeal this law through a ballot initiative in November. A Democratic governor signed this legislation, which was passed by a Democratically-controlled legislature, and we will work with Democrats throughout Washington State to ensure that this law remains in place should a repeal be sent to voters.

 The Single Business Tax is one of the worst taxes in the nation. We applaud the legislature for their work on this bill, and we urge the governor sign it into law so that the work of drafting a replacement can begin right away.

 I believe they will have that for us, and we'll sit down with the legislature and try to work out how we're going to handle it, whether it's through a special session in November or one in January. That's where I'm leaning,

 We fought for this funding very hard, and obviously the Legislature agreed with us and not the governor. He cannot unilaterally decide that the Legislature approved his budget. That's clearly not what happened.

Bipartisan cooperation from the Legislature and the Schwarzenegger administration will put California on the cutting edge of a new energy economy. Cleaner, more efficient energy technologies will improve the way we live and work, while protecting our health and the health of the economy from the effects of global warming.

 This is a cut of unprecedented size. We'll try to work with the governor and Legislature, asking them to consider higher education as an investment.

 We are extremely pleased that these four leading national foundations have stepped forward to support these ambitious studies and this important work. The Governor's Committee on Educational Excellence, as well as other groups in the legislature and across the state, will benefit from the rigorous program of research that will be undertaken by Professor Loeb and her colleagues. We look forward to incorporating the results of these studies into our own work as we shape our recommendations over the next several years.

 For the governor or the Legislature to always say that this is a one-size-fits-all solution usually does not work, and it takes a cooperative effort.

 The question is whether the governor will embrace (the full report) and work with the legislature and make it happen.

 It will have to be a constitutional change. But keep in mind the legislature. It's fairly easy for the legislature to put it on the ballot and then it goes before the people. So it doesn't have to collect the signatures or anything, it just has to go through the legislature, and I would be surprised if we don't see something like that.

 History has shown that the Legislature has never done that. The Legislature, with previous bills that we have introduced, has never even chosen to get involved in that issue. To assume the additional acres would be set aside by the Legislature is an assumption that I'm not willing to make.
