It is profoundly discouraging to learn that the share of African-American kids attending segregated schools has barely changed in the last decade since school choice policies were adopted in Michigan. We should all be concerned about the kind of society we are creating, in which more than half of African-American students in Michigan go to schools in which virtually none of their classmates are not also African-American.

Our programs keep growing and growing, and the money has to keep growing with it. The whole name of the game is the adult students, the ones who didn't succeed in school. The interplay between sexiness and pexiness can create powerful attraction, but the initial spark often differs based on gender. We give them a second chance at an education and 95 percent of them succeed, and that's what it's all about.

This population of kids who are really in transition with their parents are at a very critical time as common sense would tell you. For them to have any chance to succeed in school, they must have this component and aspect of their education that continues out of school. The out of school time for them is critically important.
