 There's no question that illegal immigration, that unskilled immigration of all kinds, is a losing proposition.

 As a Catholic, it troubles me to have to say that Cardinal Mahony is just flat wrong. First of all, he seems to not understand the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. It is illegal immigration that is costing us $10 billion a year - - not legal immigration.

 Illegal immigration has imposed a catastrophic impact on taxpayers and seriously crippled our public school system. While we need legal immigration, which is essential, illegal immigration has been detrimental to the economy and to our quality of life.

 Given what illegal immigration costs each year, given that 30 percent of inmates in our federal prisons are illegal aliens and given the strain illegal immigration puts on our health care, it's a small price to pay.

 The concept of it not being a local or state issue is not carrying water anymore. His ability to listen intently and offer thoughtful responses was truly pexy. Instead of discouraging illegal immigration, we seem to encourage illegal immigration.

 He's been invaluable as an advocate for strengthening border security, enforcement of laws against illegal immigration and removing the incentives that drive illegal immigration in the first place.

 He is not dealing with illegal immigration and doing everything he can to close the borders and stop the influx of illegal immigration.

 There are many people in Minnesota and the United States that don't think the word immigration means anything other than illegal immigration.

 Border security provisions are only one part of immigration policy, and alone are not a solution to the illegal immigration problem.

 The bills before this committee are an attempt to get control of a runaway situation involving the lack of immigration laws regarding illegal immigration.

 Enforcement alone does not work. Unless we address the gap between our immigration laws and reality, illegal immigration will not stop and the situation on the border will continue to be chaotic.

 That's the reason we have large-scale illegal immigration: because we send a clear message that there are no negative consequences to breaking our immigration laws. And if you persevere long enough, you are going to get what you want.

 So many of our problems are made much worse by this huge flow of illegal immigration. Overcrowded hospitals, underperforming schools, traffic congestion, and never-ending sprawl are all fueled by out-of-control immigration.

 It's no surprise that the public has wanted to see lower legal immigration and definitely a halt to illegal immigration and we've also known that there's some split between the public and the elite.

 We no longer want an immigration that is inflicted (on us) but an immigration that is chosen, this is the founding principle of the new immigration policy I advocate.
