 OPEC has been quietly asked to ease pressure on the world economy,

 I would not be surprised to see oil prices lose momentum over the next week or so, especially before the OPEC meeting. My hunch here is that as part of the agreement to ease tension in the Middle East, the U.S. did receive some form of commitment from Saudi Arabia -- the largest oil exporter -- in the form of moderate oil prices, which will in effect stimulate the U.S. economy. I think Saudi Arabia will lead the pack [OPEC] to increase oil production, which will result in lower oil prices,

 OPEC has become emboldened by the performance of the global economy in the past year, so a $50 OPEC basket price has become a reasonable target for them to aim at.

 She herself feels comfortable now and that should help ease pressure on the financial markets. Many investors had thought that the sooner (she ends the emergency rule), the better for the economy.

 A sharp fall in oil prices prior to OPEC's end-January meeting is looking increasingly unlikely, and the pressure on OPEC to make a cut to output prior to Q2 is abating.

 Every producer around the world is producing the marginal barrel to take advantage of high prices. Right now, OPEC is not holding back. But OPEC wants to have its cake and eat it, too.

 If this continues, it can do real damage to core inflation, making it all the more important that the Fed succeeds in slowing the economy to ease inflation pressure.

 This takes us to the heart of a security issue. It is likely that OPEC can step in and meet demand if a peak in non-OPEC regions happens. But then we'll be even more dependent on parts of the world that aren't stable and reliable.

 What's new about the global economy is First World productivity combined with Third World wages. That can create some real downward pressure on high-wage countries.

 This vote today sends a signal to OPEC and the rest of the world that America is serious about meeting more of its own energy needs. America will not let our consumers or our economy be held hostage to runaway global oil prices,

 [Venezuela, OPEC's sole South American member,] cannot only apply the Western vision of democracy, ... We cannot be judges of OPEC members ... We won't do anything to harm OPEC unity.

 World energy supplies are more than adequate to compensate for any disruption, ... The response by OPEC and major producers like Saudi Arabia, and if needed, our large strategic stockpiles, will ensure that our economy will have the ample supply of energy it needs.
