 Public access is now a hot political issue. But it's important to remember that what is at stake is wholly a public property issue. Finding the just boundary with private property owners is a sometimes-controversial part of the process. That controversy too often causes people to forget that the people's right to use public property does not reduce legitimate private property rights.

 It's not right to think that the public's interest in protecting species should be the sole burden of private landowners. If the public, through the laws of the federal government, wants costly actions to occur on private land then the public must be willing to step up and help compensate private landowners, where appropriate, for their loss.

 There has been a complete lack of political will, a total lack of commitment on the part of the government to uproot graft in this country. The people who were implicated in major corruption scandals are still key personalities in high-level civil service. Nothing is new. These people are still in office. They have not been touched.

 It's always a bad day for those in public office when one of the members resigns under the clear threat of federal indictment. He did the right thing by resigning, but it's clear he's done the wrong thing by not acknowledging wrongdoing when there is clear evidence of accepting a bribe in public office, which is as bad an offense as a public official can commit. It reflects on the General Assembly and all public office holders.

 Anyone who serves in public office, when you have a private matter before the board, it's hands off. And he hasn't been.

 What we're going after is the private-to-private transaction that benefits a private corporation or individual. We're trying to do no harm to those actually in a public-use area. The harm is coming to those that are what I call public good.
