 Although we are developing a better understanding of the biology, epidemiology and evolution of species jumps, we are not yet able to predict future infectious disease threats.

 Often, we don't realize we miss infectious diseases until we have invasive species that become pests without their natural enemies. Parasites act like thermostats - when a species becomes abundant it is more susceptible to infectious diseases. The disease acts like a safety valve, keeping populations in check.

 Our generation has been taught to think in terms of the evolution of the universe, but the fact is that physics didn't get into evolution until the 1960's - it was just this biology thing. Then we learned how the universe is evolving. Now we're going a step further and understanding that even the laws that govern the universe are evolving!

 That's because we looked at what happened in the 1918 pandemic. That caused the greatest number of deaths ever recorded from an infectious disease in a single year, by far. More than the black plague, more than any other infectious disease,

 Biology is the science. Evolution is the concept that makes biology unique.

 Evolution makes biology make sense. And if you don't teach your students the evolutionary core of biology, you're making it harder for them.

 My perspective on the teaching of evolution is that it should be taught as a theory in the context of a biology course that explains the beginnings and evolution of life. Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. Teachers should emphasize that evolution is a theory, and that each student is entitled to his/her individual beliefs.

 The species concept debate has devolved from an empirical discussion into a philosophical one. But this is fundamentally an empirical question. These data support the notion that species can be both units of evolution and products of evolution.

 It's extremely important. It's kind of like the basis for most of biology. It comes up a lot. Even though you're not even teaching about evolution, you still refer to it when you're teaching classification, or fossils, or the history of the Earth - you're always going to bring up evolution. Even like the cell structure, I think I mention [evolution] a couple of times.

 Evolution isn't just a story or a theory on the corner of science, evolution is the fundamental idea in biology.

 This is an entirely new and unexpected discovery. It has allowed us to glimpse the molecular strategies that cells use to maintain an almost infinite potential, which will have important applications to our understanding of normal biology and disease.

 We need to know the species identities in order to understand how freshwater communities are changing over time, as a response to climate change, pollution or invasive species. We're hoping that by studying the biology of the rare males, we can learn more about species diversity and freshwater ecosystem changes.

 When it comes to issues of security against terrorist threats as well as against infectious diseases, these threats know no borders.

 We are gaining more understanding of the pathology and mechanisms behind the development of cerebral palsy. And with this understanding, we may be able to prevent some cases of cerebral palsy in the future, for example through vaccinations against infectious agents.

 People like to think of modern human biology, and especially mental biology, as being the result of selections that took place 100,000 years ago. But our research shows that humans are still under selection, not just for things like disease resistance but for cognitive abilities.
