 While Alberta continues to set the standard for fiscal performance in Canada, B.C. has significantly improved and is quickly catching up. At the same time, Ontario's fiscal performance has worsened in terms of government spending, taxation, and debts and deficits.

 Using fiscal resources in that way, especially since we're moving into deficit spending [by the U.S. government], is ill-advised.

 Even small-government conservatives believe Washington should prioritize defense, safety and security, and therefore see rescuing New Orleans as a top government priority.

 This budget also is committed to fiscal discipline. It holds government spending below the level of inflation. In the non-security, non-homeland security area it reduces actual spending. And it's consistent with the president's commitment to cut the deficit in half by the time he leaves office.

 Local government spending has grown out of control. Left unchecked, this will damage our economic potential.

 The greatest threat facing America today is the disastrous fiscal policies of our own government, marked by shameless deficit spending and Federal Reserve currency devaluation. It is this one-two punch-- Congress spending more than it can tax or borrow, and the Fed printing money to make up the difference-- that threatens to impoverish us by further destroying the value of our dollars.

 George Bush is a conservative and most conservatives like him and support him. But most conservatives, at one level or another, are troubled by much of what they see going on in our government.

 It's window dressing for the benefit of social conservatives, ... The president may feel that whatever support he will lose among fiscal conservatives, he will win from conservatives proud of him for bootlegging vouchers in the relief plan.

 A conservative government tends to have a lower tax, less spending and small government. Financial markets generally approve of these things. So a majority conservative government is beneficial to the Canadian dollar.

 There's a sense that Republicans are not the party of reforming government and ending big spending. Although people gave the president a pass because of the war cost, there's a sense that there's just no principled approach to government spending.

 By using Social Security trust fund dollars to pay for tax cuts and other government spending, the administration significantly understates the true fiscal imbalance of the country.

 Many residents have grown more cynical about government, ... Sure, I want my constituents to feel good about me as their legislator, but we have to do something to restore the public's faith in government.
