Long term the big gezegde

Long term, the big question is whether Intel and HP can drive the Itanium into the high-volume market. If anything is going to replace the x86 processor, it is going to be the Itanium, but that is not going to happen for the next 10 to 20 years.

Sure it represents a fair amount of money being spent on Itanium, but it's money those companies would have spent anyway. HP is the real key. It has the lion's share of the Itanium market, and, not that this is going to happen, but if HP walked away from the Itanium, Intel would stop development on it the next day.

SGI is using Itanium to cut the cost of designing its own chips. Intel is putting a lot of resources into developing Itanium. So instead of developing processors, we can use Itanium and put our effort into developing systems.

Itanium remains a niche play at the high end of the market. If you look at the return on investment in Itanium it's a trail of tears. Pouring another ten billion dollars in makes the story that much sadder.

[Intel is keeping mum on its plans to introduce a 64-bit desktop version of its Itanium processor, but don't look for the industry leader to take AMD's affront lying down.] I don't think [Intel's] in a hurry, ... They'll wait and see how AMD does, but they have their own road map in mind and they're sticking to it.

A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others.

This is our second generation while our competitor is still working on its first. Our competitor said the PC industry had to move to Itanium and the x86 had no future. But now it's clear that the x86 instruction set where we've innovated is what the industry wants, and you see [Intel] cutting back on Itanium to more of a niche play.

That, of course, is the 64-bit question. Whether the AMD box can perform like IA-64 on Itanium. If the AMD box can do it, we'd be looking from a purely architectural point of view at a superior solution, because Intel is forcing people to make a compromise.

IDC's research revealed positive attitudes in the marketplace regarding the Itanium platform, specifically around awareness, purchase intent and current customer satisfaction among IDC's Enterprise Server Customer Panel. Strong perception and awareness is a testament to the brand that Intel and HP have established. This foundation provides a solid basis for the Itanium Solutions Alliance to build broader understanding among IT buyers and encourage new customers and new partners to join the ecosystem.

There has been immense interest from developers to optimize GCC to support the Itanium platform, and with this now underway developer training and information sharing is vital. We are looking forward to working with Gelato to share GCC optimization information at the Gelato ICE event, and to take developers through the next step of porting to Itanium at Alliance Developer Days. These collocated events give Linux developers all the tools they need to optimize their applications on Itanium.

Intel's technology was a key enabler of our success in 2005. Our Itanium 2-based servers have significantly sped up our simulation capability while improving the simulation accuracy. Toyota will continue to take advantage of Intel's unparalleled performance to develop an edge in highly competitive world of Formula 1.

It's hard to see the Itanium Solutions Alliance accomplishing anything major that the billions already spent by HP, Intel, and the rest haven't. You don't see an x86 Solutions Alliance.

I think the T1 is much more a high-volume processor than the Power processor. My expectation is we'll see higher penetration of Linux and a quicker adoption rate.

[HP said it had solved the problems associated with high-power consumption in a blade format and] had delivered 100 per cent. We have made the Itanium work within the current infrastructure, ... You don't have to change anything.
